Triune Health Group Receives Temporary Injunction

There has been another court case filed in regards to the birth control mandate. The owners of Triune Health Group are Roman Catholic and felt that contraception coverage in employer sponsored health plans violated their own, personal, religious beliefs. A judge has granted the company a temporary injunction from the birth control mandate. To me, this is a rather odd court case! The first unexpected thing about it is the company that the case involves. Triune Health Group describes itself as “experts in Health Care Management”. They have been helping people for 20 years to improve their health and wellness … Continue reading

Mom Sues Insurers Who Denied Son’s Autism Therapy

In many states, the cost of applied behavioral analysis, or ABA, therapy is required to be covered in a health insurance plan. In Minnesota, this is not the case. A mother in Minnesota is suing two insurance companies who refused to cover the ABA treatment that her son required. Applied behavioral analysis, or ABA, is a treatment used with children who have autism. It is an ongoing form of therapy. Several states, including California and Florida, have laws in place that require health insurance plans to cover the cost of ABA treatment. Sadly, not all states have laws that require … Continue reading

Airborne Isn’t All it’s Claimed to Be

A writer friend of mine (who you’ll be meeting soon, I promise) tipped me off to the news that Airborne is settling a twenty-three million dollar class action lawsuit for false advertising. A little bit of history: Airborne was created by a teacher as a way to prevent colds (and treat them if you already had one). The product was created in 1999 and by 2006 had made more than one hundred million dollars. Not bad for a school teacher, huh? Too bad 2006 was the year the trouble started. A TV news report questioned the truth of Airborne’s claims. … Continue reading

Diamond Pet Foods Settlement

Before last year’s Menu Foods disaster that killed many dogs and cats across the country, there was another pet food recall. In late 2005, Diamond Pet Foods recalled dog food that was contaminated with a kind of mold called aflatoxin. Dozens of dogs across the United States died from severe liver damage. Diamond Pet Foods has reached a settlement with pet owners affected by the contaminated food. The company will pay more than three million dollars to affected pet owners. Owners of a dog that died from eating the contaminated food will receive up to one thousand dollars. Owners of … Continue reading

Celebrity Updates: Quaid’s Sue Drug Company

Who can blame them? It’s official; actor Dennis Quaid and his wife Kimberly have filed a lawsuit against the makers of heparin, the blood thinner that was inadvertently administered to their newborns in massive (and potentially deadly) doses. According to news reports, the Quaid’s filed a product liability lawsuit in Chicago and are seeking roughly $50,000 in damages. The suit claims the drug manufacturer, which is based in Illinois, was “negligent in packaging different doses of the product in similar vials with blue backgrounds.” The lawsuit further claims the company knew of previous dosage mix-ups yet failed to recall shipments … Continue reading

Dan Rather Wants $70 Million From Former Bosses

How could you not see this coming? Former CBS anchor Dan Rather filed a $70 million lawsuit against CBS Corp. and CBS’ parent company today. In the court papers, the newsman claims his former bosses made him the “scapegoat” for the controversy story that was later discredited regarding President Bush’s military service during the Vietnam War. You’ll recall 75-year-old Rather was removed from his anchor job at “CBS Evening News” in March 2005. He was later replaced by short-term successor Bob Schieffer and eventually by current anchor Katie Couric. Since his firing Rather has maintained that the network “intentionally botched” … Continue reading

Actress Sued For Wearing The Wrong Watch

There was a time in my life when I felt naked without my watch. I was a TV reporter and deadlines ruled my life. Then I had a baby, and my watch and I took an extended vacation from each other. These days I spend more days looking for my watch than wearing it, which is why this next story about an Oscar-winning actress and her multiple timepieces caught my eye. According to news reports, Swiss watchmaker Raymond Weil is suing actress Charlize Theron for wearing a Christian Dior timepiece when she was supposed to wear only Weil watches. The … Continue reading

Singer/Actress Faces Wrongful Death Lawsuit

If you’ve been following the reports on the fatal car accident involving R&B singer Brandy then you may have seen this next item coming a mile away. According to PEOPLE magazine, the parents of the woman killed in the accident just filed a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit against the former “Moesha” star. According to court documents, the victim’s parents allege, “Brandy (her real name is Brandy Norwood) was driving recklessly” when she struck their daughter. The court papers go on to say on December 30, 2006 the 38-year-old victim, a mother of two, was on her way to one … Continue reading

Strange Election Stories

Tuesday’s mid-term elections may be over, but they are certainly not forgotten, especially in the state where I reside. Strange people live everywhere, including here in Wisconsin, where a local music store owner who unsuccessfully tried to run for local sheriff is still making headlines. William Fenrick legally changed his name to Andy Griffith to run for sheriff. On Tuesday, he earned 1200 votes and finished last among the three candidates running for Grant County sheriff. The former Fenrick told local reporters that he changed his name earlier this year to that of the actor who portrayed the fictional Sheriff … Continue reading

Tales From Our Sue-Happy Society

Human beings are strange creatures and if you don’t believe with me, wait to you read this blog. A Connecticut man is claiming that he had a heart attack because he was given an ill-fitting hairpiece that didn’t match his hair color. But, wait, there’s more. According to news reports, the man, who survived the attack says he is now planning to sue the wig shop. A local newspaper reports that Paul Lewis suffered a heart attack soon after refusing to pay for the hairpiece that “was not only the wrong size but also the wrong color.” He told a … Continue reading
