Beetle Mania in my Home

Three years ago there’s no way I would have considered it endearing to be compared to a guinea pig. Yet these days I can often be found donning a silk cape and making like Linny the guinea pig to my pre-preschooler’s Tuck the turtle during our daily “Wonder Pets” adventures. (Ming-Ming the duckling is grandma’s role when she is around.) To say my daughter is an avid “Wonder Pets” fan would be an understatement. At age two she had memorized the theme song of the popular Nickelodeon series and would happily belt out the words during our trips to the … Continue reading

Jimmy Neutron

“Jimmy Neutron” is a definite favorite at our house. Appearing daily on Nickelodeon, the show is a combination of science, boyhood pranks, and just a little bit of rude humor. While the show is geared toward your seven-and-older set, we watch it as a family, from our two-year-old up to my husband (I won’t tell you how old he is. He wouldn’t appreciate it.) Jimmy is a boy genius. His head has grown a bit large, to hold his incredible brain, and he even has a laboratory in his backyard. Most of his inventions work, too, but not always without … Continue reading

Bob the Builder

Can he fix it? Yes, he can! “Bob the Builder” is a wildly popular children’s television show. First appearing on Nickelodeon, and now a regular on PBS, “Bob” is a claymation creation about a building yard and the owner (who would be Bob) his helper, Wendy, and all the machines they use every day. Each of these machines is alive and has a personality all their own. Scoop is a yellow digger truck with a scoop on the front. He’s the first truck Bob ever bought back in the day, and they’ve constructed a lot together over the years. Scoop … Continue reading

Remember Watching Saturday Morning Cartoons?

When I was a kid, I didn’t sleep in on Saturdays. I couldn’t wait to get up so I could spend the morning watching cartoons. It was the one day each week when there was nothing on for hours but shows for kids. In between shows, there was Schoolhouse Rock. Come on now, I know some of you know the words to those catchy tunes! Do you remember Scooby Doo and those meddling kids or Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Toons? Do you remember any of these? Flintstones Popeye Pink Panther Top Cat Tom and Jerry Super … Continue reading

Television and Your Toddler

When you have a toddler, you are faced with a lot of choices. So after you are done wrestling with the let them or not let them watch television, then you have to wrestle with what shows are good for toddlers or at least appropriate – and with the plethora of programming available out there – this can be a lot more difficult than just electing to put the television on PBS and calling it good. Not that I am knocking PBS, I was weaned on Sesame Street and the Electric Company. While the former is still available, the latter … Continue reading

Childhood Remembered: Captain Kangaroo

When I was a child, Captain Kangaroo was the man! Before Electric Company, before Mr. Rogers, even before Sesame Street, there was Captain Kangaroo. I wish they still showed reruns of his show on television today. Of course, I suppose he would be a bit outdated compared to the Doodlebops or Wiggles, but I would still like to see the show again. Bob Keeshan starred as Captain Kangaroo in the longest running network children’s show. It ran from 1955 until 1984. Along with the Captain, we got to see his sidekick Mr. Greenjeans and the puppets Mr. Moose and Bunny … Continue reading

June Bugs

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been writing about weddings, ceremonies and more as May Marriage Month was celebrated. We’ve seen May Day come and go, Mother’s Day come and go, the end of the school year, graduations and of course, Memorial Day. May remains one of the busiest months on my personal calendar and I am ready to heave a sigh of relief as we make our journey from May into June. The month of June is as popular if not more so for wedding than the month of May. I’ve been trying to come up with some ideas … Continue reading
