A Baby Will Turn You Into Someone Different Than You’ve Ever Imagined

My youngest sister has her first baby now. And, as a result, I think I have become her go-to person when she is wondering anything about motherhood. From breastfeeding, to “what’s that!”, to “should I worry?” questions, it has brought us a little closer as sisters. We are 8 years apart in age, but now it seems like now that she is a Mom, we have plenty to talk about. I look at her reaction to things and smile now that I have have survived 3 newborns. She texted me the other day to let me know that she had … Continue reading

The Shocking Verdict of Casey Anthony

On Tuesday I watched the live broadcast of the verdict being read for Casey Anthony. As was the case for most people, I was stunned when I heard “Not Guilty.” Poor little Caylee Anthony won’t see justice done…at least not this side of things. Facebook got very active, lots of thoughts and opinions. Most people can’t wrap their minds around the verdict but others believe the circumstantial evidence wasn’t enough and that the prosecution reached too high in making this a death penalty case. Then of course there is the whole thing of not knowing what exactly caused her death. … Continue reading

A Pick-Me-Up For Parents

I love being a mom. I thank God every day that I can stay at home with my daughter and be the person who spends every day with her during these very impressionable years. There’s nothing I’d rather be doing. And yet, the fact that I love being a mom doesn’t mean I always feel happy and fulfilled. Although my daughter is only 11 months old, there are some stages where I’m not quite sure what to do with her. When she was a newborn, it was easy; all I did was feed her, hold her, and change her diaper, … Continue reading

Do You Have a Mommy Uniform?

What do you wear to drop off your kids at school in the morning? Is it the same outfit you wear to the supermarket, the pet store or the gas station? I tend to dress in the same outfit to do all of the aforementioned tasks—-jeans or khakis with a plain button-down shirt or sweater. My wardrobe is simple, easy to clean, and yes, rather boring. However, at least it won’t get me banned from stores. In England, a couple of grocery stores are cracking down on moms who shop in slumpy, dumpy outfits that resemble nightwear. You know exactly … Continue reading

A Mother No Matter What

A mother is a mother is a mother regardless of whether she is on a business trip 6,000 miles away from home or whether her “baby” joins the military and is deployed to the middle of nowhere… or if she’s doing time in a North Korean labor camp. The latter situation is what Euna Lee is dealing with right now. Lee is an American journalist and mother of an adorably cute 4-year-old daughter with her husband Michael. She is also the colleague of Laura Ling, whose sister Lisa was a former member of ABC’s “The View” and current investigative correspondent … Continue reading

Confessions of a Completely Insane Mother – Kersten Campbell

I recently read “Confessions of a Completely Insane Mother by Kersten Campbell. Kersten is the mother of five and a convert to the church. This book is a collection of essays of her reflections on motherhood and the church. As Kersten says in her introduction she has “seasoned each story with a generous helping of hyperbole.” The result is a great bunch of essays that had me laughing out loud. I read this book over Easter weekend when I was spending time with family. It’s a great book to read in busy situations or when you need a quick pick … Continue reading

Parents Who Approve of Wax Jobs for 8-Year-Olds

Forget about your teenage daughter; would you allow your 8-year-old to get a bikini wax? I cannot fathom a mother out there who would give her blessing to such an atrocity. Yet, after reading my previous blog, a friend of mine informed me of a “Today” show piece where a Philadelphia aesthetician was asked by a seemingly sane adult female to book a bikini wax appointment for her 8-year-old daughter. According to the aesthetician, the request wasn’t due to the girl’s early development of hair. Rather, it was about the mother’s obsession with wanting her daughter to be a supermodel. … Continue reading

Relief Society: Dealing With the Bad Days

Have you ever had one of those days when you wanted to lock yourself in a room and just have everyone leave you alone? Or maybe you just wanted to get out and leave the kids behind. It is important to take time as mothers to rejuvenate. A lot of times women in the church feel a pressure to feel perfect or they may feel guilty when they feel the need to be alone or to spend time taking care of themselves. It can be difficult to balance your needs with the needs of your family. There is a lot … Continue reading

Resisting the Urge to “Mother” Your Spouse

This morning, as I was waiting for the bus with my son and our neighbors, it was pouring rain. While my son and I were under umbrellas, my poor husband was going back and forth bringing out four barrels of recycling (we generate more recycling than we do garbage). He was wearing his good coat with a hat and hood, so that offered some protection. Still, his pants were pretty wet at the shins and cuffs. Seeing him like this, I offered to run into the house to fetch another pair of pants that he could then change into when … Continue reading
