A Day in the Life of a One-Year-Old: Morning

I’m confident and comfortable with the fact that every child is different. Each child has different sleep habits, eating habits, and develops at his own rate. Still, I like to hear what other babies and mothers are going through to see how it compares to what my baby and I are experiencing. For this reason, I’m going to give you a day in the life of my one-year-old. I figure some of you reading this may also have a one-year-old, or a child close to that age. As your child goes through her day, you may be thinking, “Is that … Continue reading

Mourning the Loss of Napping

I have heard more than a few times that naps are a parent’s saving grace! If it wasn’t for nap time, many parents of young ones would truly lose their minds. I think that is why it can be so disconcerting when a child either gives up naps, or turns out to be the sort of person who requires less sleep. We worry for the health of the child and we also wonder what we are going to do as parents without that nice nap time break! I know that in my own parenting, it came as quite a shock … Continue reading

Kindergarten Naptime

Although I cannot remember much from my kindergarten year, I can recall several events from first and second grades. I vividly recall rest time. In both first and second grade, we had a specified time of day that we put our heads down on the desks to rest. Now, many kindergarten students do not have a naptime. My school is the only school in our county that participates in no form of naptime. The other kindergarten classes either have naptime everyday or periodically (when time permits or the teacher feels it is needed). Naps are things of education’s past. Some … Continue reading

A Nap Can Be Good For Your Heart

Enjoy an afternoon siesta? Like to catch a few zzzs between lunch and the end of the work day? Here’s some good news — research from the University of Athens in Greece says that a midday nap may help reduce the risk of fatal heart problems. This study tracked more than twenty-three thousand healthy Greek adults for six years or so. The ones who made time for a half-hour nap at least three times per week had a thirty-seven percent lower risk of heart attack and other heart problems than the non-nappers did. The majority of the participants were in … Continue reading

The Return of Dad’s Magic Shoulder

When my daughters were babies I used to marvel at how quickly they often responded to their being nursed, how soothing it was, how comforting, and how they drifted into sleep. This was not always the case, and my wife will tell you of many nights feeling, well, attached. Dads of course don’t have that capacity, and yes more than once I would cry out exasperatedly about not coming with mammary glands. The bottle is not the same as it might have been in another time, when few children were being breastfed. But dads do have something to compensate: a … Continue reading
