Three Things Needed for a Triumphant Christian Life

When we read Mark’s gospel we see that there were three things, which made it possible for Jesus to triumphantly enter Jerusalem. Those three things were 1. Obedience, 2. Sacrifice 3. Worship Jesus was obedient to the Father’s will. He knew what awaited him in Jerusalem but he willingly went forward to Jerusalem as the sacrifice for our sinsMark 10:45, Philippians 2:6-8.. His whole life was one of obedience and worship of His Heavenly Father, It is because of what Jesus has done in giving his life for us that we are able to enter into a relationship with the … Continue reading

What Makes a Person One God Can Use?

Do you want to be a person God can use? What qualifications would you need to have to be someone God can use? I’m going to suggest there are five qualities you need. 1. Willingness Willingness to be used by God in the way He chooses. Sometimes it may dovetail in with what you think your gifts may be. But that may not always be the case. Sometimes he may call you to step out of your comfort zone into area you don’t feel equipped for, so you absolutely have to depend on Him for everything you need. 2. Teachability … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Obedience: “When the Lord Commands, Do It”

Lesson #13 in the Joseph Smith manual for this year’s course of study is entitled, “Obedience: ‘When the Lord Commands, Do It.’” This was Joseph Smith’s personal philosophy of life and his every action showed it. He was a little rough around the edges, but he was unfailingly obedient to the things he was asked to do. We begin this lesson with a reminder of the many times the early Saints were asked to move to join with the body of the Church. They came from New York to Kirtland, later to Nauvoo, and then ended up in Salt Lake … Continue reading

Ignoring God’s Promptings

Have you ever felt prompted NOT to do a certain thing but went ahead anyway? Or you felt a prompting to do something but didn’t? Afterwards you realized you should have listened to that inner voice. A while back I had such an experience. For our 40th wedding anniversary my husband bought me a beautiful ring. I wanted to wear it to a 21st birthday party. So I did. We slept overnight at our son’s place, which meant I also wore the ring to the football game the next day. Even though I felt prompted to take the ring off, … Continue reading

What Pleases God

In my last blog I touched on living lives that are pleasing to the Lord. If we want to please the Lord, we first need to figure out and learn those things that are pleasing to Him, Ephesians 5:10. Fortunately God helps us through His Word and He tells us those attitudes and action that please Him. Here is a list of the attitudes and actions that please God. If we believe in Jesus, John 3:16, 18 If we love Jesus, John 16:27 If we keep His commandments, John 14:21, 1 John 2:3-5 If we abide in Him and walk … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review – May 19th – 24th

Did you miss some of our blogs here in LDS this week? Never fear—this summary will get you caught up to speed. We began the week with a closer look at the fifth commandment, which tells us to honor our parents—they have sacrificed a lot for us and can also be good sources of counsel and advice for us, no matter what our age. Keep on track with the lessons at church with this week’s “Dinner Discussions,” and in “Concern for the One,” we read of Joseph B. Wirthlin’s conference address which reminds us of the need to be there … Continue reading

Senior Missionary Series: What If I Don’t Like My Call?

Once in a while, when a missionary receives their call and they learn where they are to serve, they are disappointed. Perhaps they took two years of high school Spanish and are all set to serve in a Spanish-speaking mission, and they end up in Oklahoma. Maybe their hearts were set on Canada and they are called to Japan. Whatever the case may be, there are times when the calls we are extended aren’t what we’d hoped for. As a senior missionary, you do have more say in your call than a young elder or sister has. Every effort is … Continue reading

It’s Not Conformity, It’s Called Obedience

I often hear statements that lead me to feel that the speaker doesn’t fully understand the importance of obedience. They talk about how they hate the idea of conformity, that we all have to be exactly the same way, and how they dislike the way the Church seems to want to churn out cookie-cutter people with no personalities of their own. Most often, I hear people state that they are living the commandments the way they most feel comfortable with living them, and that they don’t necessarily ascribe to the idea that we have to live up to a “standard,” … Continue reading

Scripture Study – 1 Nephi 16:33-36

Nephi’s strong steel bow broke and the other bows in the company had lost their spring, and the family began to perish for lack of food. Nephi made another bow out of wood and inquired of his father where he should go to find food. Having success in his hunt, Nephi returned to the camp and all were fed. 33. And it came to pass that we did again take our journey, traveling nearly the same course as in the beginning; and after we had traveled for the space of many days we did pitch our tents again, that we … Continue reading

General Conference From the Past: “And Why Call Ye Me Lord, Lord, and Do Not the Things Which I Say

Elder L. Tom Perry offered the following address at the October 1984 General Conference. You can read it in its entirety here, but I offer the following synopsis. From the Creation, the Lord has stressed the importance of obedience, beginning with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. After they were driven out, He gave them very specific commandments for them to follow. One of those commandments was that they should offer sacrifices unto His name. Adam did this faithfully, and one day was approached by an angel, who asked why he was doing this. Adam said, “I know … Continue reading
