Scrapbooking Your Dentist Visit

Sometimes we forget the everyday circumstances and events that surround our lives. A dentist visit is one of those very moments, that should be remembered. It’s a yearly part of childhood and for many, even more frequent than that and it should also continue on into adulthood. But why bother to commemorate your dentist visits at all? There is not necessarily a reason for scrapbooking your dentist visit. In fact, there isn’t a reason to scrapbook nearly any event, but since I love scrapbooking everyday occurrences, I think a dentist visit is just as important. I don’t scrapbook my dentist … Continue reading

What are Your Whys?

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go….” Dr. Seuss In yesterday’s post(Are You Inspired By Your Space?) I showed you my brand new work space and talked about why it inspires me. I thought it would be appropriate to talk a bit more about the “whys” of our home businesses. Everyone has different whys. I am going to sound like Dr. Seuss for a moment, but I … Continue reading

Are You Inspired By Your Space?

Quite honestly, I really haven’t given much thought to my work space until this week. I work on a laptop, so I spend most of my time sitting at the dining table or lounging on the recliner with my computer perched on my lap. I usually end up working in whatever room my children are playing in. If you read my post from a few weeks ago (Put a Fork in Me…), you know that I decided to leave my direct selling business to pursue a business that was better suited for my family. Since I was changing career paths, … Continue reading

A Home Office In Your Kitchen

Do you have a home office? Some people have a den/office set aside for the entire family to use. While others have “offices” set up throughout their home. My brother’s monopolization of his home office drove my sister-in-law to create her own “office” off the kitchen. Frankly, I love the concept of having a workspace so close to the heart of the home. No matter how large your living space, the kitchen inevitably becomes the central gathering space for friends and family. In our last home our den was a make-shift storage area so I used the kitchen table as … Continue reading

How to Stay Healthy at the Office

I work in an office where people tramp in and out all day long. Employees, clients, and random people with nothing better to do (I’ve had a couple of those in the last week) all come down to the office to talk, which is fine, of course, except when they leave “presents” behind–those nasty things called germs. I have already been yucky sick this winter when I got a bad case of bronchitis and laryngitis. I was out of work for two days, which isn’t an experience I want to live through again any time soon. Problems are not solved … Continue reading

Gift Ideas For Co-Workers

What do a stuffed rattlesnake, a stained potholder, a bag of frozen potatoes, a statute of Cher, and a partridge in a pear tree have in common? Okay, nix the bird in the tree, and you’ve got the makings of a list of the oddest gifts given to co-workers by fellow co-workers during office present swaps. According to a recent survey of 250 advertising and marketing executives, the most off-the-wall office gifts tend to raise questions about the givers holiday spirit. No kidding. We went through an entire list of them in my previous blog, but I failed to mention … Continue reading

Office Party Etiquette—Seven Tips To Preserve Your Professional Image

So you decided to attend your company’s holiday party—congratulations! Now that you have made it over the first hurdle–talking yourself into attending (see my previous blog on that topic)—there are just a few rules you should keep in mind before sashaying your way into party central: Dress Appropriately First and foremost be sure to dress appropriately for the occasion. Etiquette experts say that this rule especially applies to women who sometimes use company parties to strut their stuff. Here’s my rule of thumb: If you think it’s something Paris Hilton would sport—don’t wear it. Anything short, tight or revealing should … Continue reading

Company Holiday Parties—Putting On The Ritz

Have you received the invitation to your company’s Christmas party yet? A recent survey shows that if you haven’t received one yet, it will likely happen soon. The survey of human resource executives found that 79% of companies will be planning a holiday party this year. What’s more, the survey found a high percentage of companies will be spending more to put on their office bashes. Nearly one in three companies said it plans to boost party budgets this year, up from 23% in 2005. While only 6% of firms said they are cutting their party budget. The survey found … Continue reading

Making Friends At Work—Helpful or Harmful?

I’ve done news stories on office romances and whether or not they’re a good idea, but today I heard an interesting discussion on the radio as to what role friendships should play in the workplace? The passionate responses were in response to the question: “Is it smarter to keep your personal and professional lives separate or to seek out friendships at your place of employment?” The listeners who were pro-work place friendships maintained that an office buddy could provide feedback on your performance or act as a sounding board. Of course, the other positive aspects of having work place pals … Continue reading

Have A Cold? Doctors Say Don’t Bring It To Their Offices

Have you had your first cold of the season? Our entire family was sick this week. No question about it—cold season is here. But, if you are like me and you call your doctor to get something stronger than over the counter meds because you “can’t afford to be sick,” (it’s the line I used) don’t be surprised if the receptionist tells you that you are better off at home. It happened to me and apparently, I’m not alone. Some physicians don’t want cold sufferers to rush into their offices with a cold that can be cured at home. In … Continue reading
