What Teen Girls Experience Online

It is well known that adult women experience harassment online. It can be stressful, frustrating, and abusive. What many parents do not realize is that teenage girls are also experiencing online harassment. It might be a good idea to sit down and ask your teenager about what she has faced via social media. The Pew Research Center did a study called “Teens, Technology, and Romantic Relationships”. Both male and female teens were included in the study. The teens were between the ages of 13 and 17. All of them were American. Some of the study revealed data about how teens … Continue reading

Adoption Books with Great Art: You Are Special, You Were Chosen

You Are Special; You Were Chosen is a sweet little book which grew out of the bedtime story that the author’s father read to her each night. Its soft, detailed colored pencil/pastel illustrations definitely qualify it for my Adoption Books with Great Art series. The lovely pictures show diverse children and families, including siblings of different races, which I really appreciate, as that is something I have a hard time finding. Books featuring a multiracial classroom are becoming common, as are books featuring families of color—but multiracial families are still difficult to find. I almost bought a book the other … Continue reading

Online Romance Scams

This afternoon Wayne surprised me and came home from work early. Thank goodness I had just woken up from my nap. He’d tease me mercilessly if he found me conked out on the couch. (He thinks that’s what I do all day as it is, which I do sometimes, but not always. But he’d never believe me if he actually caught me in the act.) At any rate, he’d had CPE (Continuing Professional Education) training for half the day. Instead of going in to the office for only a few hours, he opted to skip the drive and come home … Continue reading

Meeting Someone Online Continued

Previously I discussed how it would not be my preference to meet my mate online. However today’s technological world has allowed for many happy couples to begin their relationship on the Internet. In my last article I also offered some tips for meeting or looking for a companion online. In those tips, I discussed how it is important to be honest about your appearance but not too open about your personal information. Your safety should always come first. When you first meet someone online, it is best in the beginning to keep the conversations to emails only. Learn all that … Continue reading

Meeting Someone Online

While many of us are skeptical, some people are comfortable with looking for a partner or a mate online. News programs such as Dateline and 20/20 have completely turned me against any type of online relationships. Having said that I likely should retract. There are several Families.com readers and writers that I feel I have created a friendship with through comments and private messaging. However, I am not one that would go out looking for someone special through the Internet. When using online dating services, one must be very careful. It is true that some of these sites work. I … Continue reading

Online Dating for Single Moms

I will be the first to admit that after going through my divorce, I was not real sure where or how to start over. I found myself the single mother of two terrific children but virtually no social life. I remember feeling unsure of the dating scene, which is why I decided to give online dating a try. What I discovered was both good and bad, which I wanted to share with you. I hope that through some of my own failures and successes, you too can find the right online dating sites to meet nice, honest man. The first … Continue reading

Looking For Love?

The world is filled with creative people who become the masterminds behind some of today’s hottest innovations. You’ve heard of online dating sites where singles looking for love use the Internet as a means to find Mr. or Ms. Right. (Fabulous idea—it makes millions.) While the sites have worked for some, others are less fortunate. And, it’s no surprise. Examine any one of the many Internet dating sites out there you will notice flaws in the system. The most obvious—there’s no embellishment filter. Enter another ingenious person—someone has come up with a way to help online daters who suffer disappointment … Continue reading

The Things You Thought You Knew – Online Relationships

Have you ever seen the movie How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days? If you haven’t, I recommend checking it out. First of all, it’s funny and secondly, there’s a message hidden away in there for those that pay attention. Online dating is a lot like this movie. Boy and girl meet in a bar and pick each other up. They both possess their own agendas and what they see in each other is the perfect opportunity to explore the possibilities. After a fun evening together, they retire back to his place for a little while. They tease each … Continue reading

The Mail Order Bride

Oddly enough, over the years – I’ve read some pretty strange stories. More often than not – the stranger the story – the more likely it is to have a kernel of truth in it. I mean, seriously – 20 years ago would you have imagined there would be a dearth of movies based on television shows from the 70s and 80s – the Dukes of Hazard was a Friday night television show along with Dallas and the Incredible Hulk – now two of those have been made into feature films and the third one is on the way. But … Continue reading
