Photography Week in Review for May 19-25, 2008

Do you use all of your camera’s features or do you stick with the AUTO mode? And once you do snap keepers of your loved ones, how long does it take for you to print them out? Do you still have photos from Christmas sitting in your digital camera? These were just some of the questions I posed to readers in the PHOTOGRAPHY blog over the past few days. This week we focused on printing: How to, how often, and how it all works. If you missed any of our discussions now is the time to catch up. May 19th—–Megapixels … Continue reading

Photo Printing Options

Judging by the line of people at my local grocery store most digital photographers print their photos outside their homes. It never ceases to amaze me how long people are willing to wait in line for the person in front of them to painstakingly go through each and every shot on store photo kiosks when they could be getting the task done at home. By using Pictbridge-enabled cameras and printers you can avoid the long lines at places such as Wal-Mart and Walgreens. For those of you unfamiliar with the name, PictBridge is the single printing format shared by the … Continue reading

Why Invest in a Photo Scanner

So you finally moved into the 21st century and got yourself a digital camera. But what about all those boxes full of loose photos that are cluttering your basement. This might just be the perfect time to finally purchase a photo scanner. Spring cleaning can be made much easier with this simple piece of technology. For those of you who are not familiar with photo scanners they function like a copy machine, but instead of printing out paper copies they digitize photographs, slides, negatives and other records for you to store on your computer. Which means pictures of your son’s … Continue reading

Photo Workshops in Paradise

I’ve always maintained that if you are looking for photo inspiration you should book a trip to Hawaii. (Okay, so I am slightly biased.) And now more than ever the Big Island of Hawaii is the spot to be to capture nature at its finest. In an effort to keep avid photographers’ creative energy flowing the Fairmont Orchid Resort located on the South Kohala Coast is offering a new stargazing program every Friday evening. Famed local astronomer Wayne Fukunaga and his team from Star Gaze Hawaii will lead the sessions. In addition, crewmembers from the Hawaiian outrigger voyaging canoe Makali’i … Continue reading

Should You Invest in an “All-In-One” Photo Printer?

It’s a question I have been grappling with for a while. In shopping around for a printer that can do double duty for my photo projects and writing jobs I’ve noticed a few trends. First, stand-alone ink-jet printers are fading fast. Stores are now filling their shelves with “all-in-one” printers that usually combine a printer, copier and scanner. What’s more, prices for these multi-purpose machines have fallen so dramatically that you can usually find an all-in-one device for the same price as a single-function printer. In my mind I look at these all-in-ones and rationalize that I’m getting a scanner … Continue reading

Monday Photo Challenge – Insects, Spiders and More

Photography Challenges are designed to get you motivated. To get you to think outside the box. These photo challenges have gotten me motivated to look around me and capture much more with my camera than I did before. Last week’s challenge (the great outdoors) was loads of fun, since the weather is so much nicer and cooler we have been spending tons of time outside. Each Monday, I post a challenge that you can choose to do, or you can choose not to do. That is completely up to you. My hope is that when you do the photo challenges, … Continue reading

How to Best Organize Your Negatives

Negatives are a pretty important part of photography. If you took picture prior to your digital, you have negatives. There is not much of a way around it. However, knowing how to properly organize and store negatives is something you might be doing for a long time to come. Without negatives you cannot reprint photographs, or even print any at all. I have hundreds upon hundreds of those tiny little strips in my possession – not only mine, but some of my extended families too. Figuring out how to organize them and store them was simply a nightmare at first. … Continue reading

Monday Photo Challenge – Around the House or Pieces of Home

I am having so much fun with these photo challenges, and I really hope you are as well. Each Monday, I post a challenge that you can choose to do, or you can choose not to do. It is up to you. My hope is that when you do the photo challenges, it is getting you to think outside the box, and obviously to take more photographs. I want you to truly play around with your camera, get to know its features, its capabilities, just get to know it better. I want you to try out new angles, lighting techniques … Continue reading

Monday Photo Challenge – Up Close and Personal

I am thoroughly addicted to close-up photography. I love filling the entire frame with the subject, eliminating distracting background and really highlighting my subject matter. Each Monday, I post a challenge that you can choose to do, or you can choose not to do. It is up to you. My hope is that when you do the photo challenges, it is getting you to think outside the box, and obviously to take more photographs. I want you to truly play with your camera, get to know it better. I want you to try out new angles, lighting techniques and more. … Continue reading

Monday Photo Challenge – A Glimpse of a Historic Landmark

I have decided to post a challenge each Monday that you can do, or you can not do. My hopes in the photo challenges are to get you thinking outside the box, and taking more pictures. I want to you to try out new angles, lighting techniques and more. If there is something you would like to see, or something that you are wanting to learn or see examples of, that I might be able to incorporate into a challenge, let me know. Most of the photographs that I show will be recent, with the exception of a few that … Continue reading
