Coping with Loss

It is difficult for anyone when they lose someone they love. It can be even more difficult to watch those that you love struggle with their loss when they do not have the knowledge of the Gospel to help them through their loss. At times, I don’t give much thought to the fact that merely knowing what happens after we die is a huge comfort to me. Since I was raised in the church, it has always been a part of my understanding of God, His Plan, and What happens after this life. But, for many, they do not have … Continue reading

For the Strength of Youth Series: Agency and Accountability

Understanding agency and accountability are fundamental in the LDS faith. Without agency, the whole Plan of Salvation doesn’t make much sense. If we didn’t come to Earth to make choices and choose through our actions to go back to our Heavenly Father, then why are we here? The For the Strength of Youth pamphlet does a great job of addressing this topic. It explains that “you are being proven to see if you will use your agency to show your love for God by keeping His commandments.” I recently taught a lesson on this topic, and after reading 2 Nephi: … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: “O How Great the Goodness of Our God”

I apologize for the delay in bringing you the Gospel Doctrine lessons for the last several weeks. We’ve been unable to attend church, due to illness, and I’m just getting caught up now. Our recommended reading for this lesson is: 2 Nephi 6-10 Also: 2 Nephi 9:10, 9:14, 9:18, 9:28, 9:39, 9:51. Jacob, one of Nephi’s younger brothers, became a great prophet as he followed in the footsteps of his father and brother. Throughout 2 Nephi and in the Book of Jacob, we see him give several heartfelt discourses on the plan of salvation. In 2 Nephi chapters 6-10, our … Continue reading

General Conference: “Salvation and Exaltation”

In his talk “Salvation and Exaltation” Elder Russell M Nelson begins his talk by welcoming Elder D. Todd Christofferson to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. He also expresses his support of the new First Presidency of the church. He explains that sustaining the First Presidency is an important part of the gospel. Elder Nelson speaks about the third Article of Faith. He points out that all mankind can be saved, but that to be saved you must be saved from both spiritual and physical death. Everyone will be resurrected as a result of Christ’s resurrection, but that each person … Continue reading

General Conference: “The Plan of Salvation”

In his talk “The Plan of Salvation” Elder L Tom Perry explains the Plan of Salvation. He begins by sharing the story of a young woman who was able to share the gospel with an acquaintance. The most important thing that she shared was the Plan of Salvation. It affected the acquaintance and caused him to look more closely at the church. Elder Perry then goes on to explain the Plan of Salvation. He begins by explaining that we are each Spirit children of our Heavenly Father. He speaks of the many who are wandering lost unsure of why they … Continue reading

General Conference: “The Great Plan of Happiness”

In his talk “The Great Plan of Happiness” Elder Earl C Tingey talks about the importance of the atonement and how it helps us to return to live with our Heavenly Father. He also talks about how knowing the plan of salvation or the plan of happiness helps us to understand our roles here on earth in relation to our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Elder Tingey says that there are five things that the plan of happiness teaches us. First, it teaches that there really is a God and a Savior for the world. Second it teaches us why … Continue reading

The Eternal Plan of Salvation

I had a discussion with a Muslim acquaintance of mine the other day. Rather, we were going back and forth on Jesus Christ, Muhammed and modern-day prophets. If you know much about Islam you know they do not believe that Jesus Christ is God, nor do they believe there have been any prophets since Muhammed. While I find that a sad state of belief, I feel the need to share the plan of salvation as Latter-day Saints understand it. Long before the world was formed, we lived with our Father in Heaven, our Savior, Jesus Christ, and all our other … Continue reading

A Review of “Plan of Salvation” by Matthew B. Brown

Simply the best book I’ve found, to date, written about our Father in Heaven’s plan of salvation. This comprehensive coverage of the topic is absolutely breathtaking. Would you like to know how Adam and Eve came to be, according to the prophets? Br. Brown has done extensive research and shared it in the book. Do you understand what occurred in the councils in heaven which precipitated the creation of the earth and our sojourn into mortality? Do you understand the fate of children who die too early? Do you realize the hope, the promise and the beauty of the plan … Continue reading

The Value of Family

In a world fraught with so much uncertainty and danger I find peace in the companionship, support and love of my family. Interestingly there are two types of family. There is the family you are born into and then the family that is formed through close ties and friendships. Both play necessary roles in our lives. For instance, I have a friend who is the single daughter in a home of eight boys. Her girlfriends are her sisters of the heart and play that very role. For me, I grew up with six sisters and five brothers – I’m inundated … Continue reading
