Turkey as Diet Food

I know many of us consider turkey an annual binging food that we only see on Thanksgiving so what I am about to say may shock you. Turkey is an excellent diet food. Mind you, I said turkey, not turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and whipped cream. I’m a very busy mother of two boys so finding time to prepare healthy meals for myself between kiddie meals and bottles is practically an impossibility. Like most mothers, if I have nothing available that can be microwaved in less than two minutes and eaten, I usually fall back … Continue reading

Six Ways to Boost Your Metabolism

Want your body to become a more efficient fat-burning machine? Try these tips! Be sure that you are eating enough. Starving yourself will make your body slow your metabolism — not speed it up! For most women, eating around 1400 calories daily will keep your metabolism moving. Less than 1200 calories per day is less than your body needs for basic biological function — so your body will be forced to break down muscle for energy. That’s not a good thing. Make sure you include breakfast in your day. That early morning meal gives you a burst of energy AND … Continue reading

Tweaking the Diet

I received this email and since there is so much in it that we can all learn from, I wanted to share it and my response: “My husband said he read something that said it was dangerous to consume less than 1200 calories per day without a doctor’s supervision. I’ve been averaging around 950 calories per day for my meals. I have lost 24 lbs, averaging 0.6 lbs/day, 4 lbs/wk. I have been surprised by my progress, but I feel great, lots of energy, etc. I have a basal metabolic rate of approx. 15 calories per day per pound of … Continue reading

The Food Pyramid WILL Make You Fat!

Every five years, the federal government issues official dietary guidelines for Americans. Our children are taught these guidelines at school and school cafeterias are expected to follow them. The general population is expected to follow these guidelines as the way to a healthy body. Well, researchers are finally questioning what I’ve known for the past decade: Are the national guidelines advising Americans to eat a low-fat diet actually feeding the current obesity epidemic? Well, DUH! According to the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York are saying that the current guidelines have … Continue reading

Dymatize Elite Whey Protein Isolate, Gourmet Vanilla Flavor

Dymatize Elite Whey Protein Isolate, Gourmet Vanilla Flavor One of the key tenets of the Eating-for-Life part of the Body-for-Life program is the fact that you must eat six meals per day. Most people on Body-for-Life, myself included, have three whole food meals per day and three snacks of meal replacement drinks or bars. Because of that, whey protein is a staple in my home. It is quick to prepare and consume and has all the right ingredients so there is absolutely no thought necessary in the … Continue reading

Protein and Dieting

I’ve shared a great deal with my pals at the Diary of an Overweight Mom Forum and they’ve shared a great deal with me too. I think the most important thing I’ve shared with them is the need for adequate amounts of protein when we’re trying to lose weight. So often we cut out protein because it provides the biggest chunk of calories through the course of our day but we’re doing ourselves a great disservice when we do this. Sure, it seems logical. Instead of having a 230 calorie roasted chicken breast, you could just have a 65 calorie … Continue reading

Low-Carb Diets and Conventional Wisdom

Low-carbohydrate diets do work. People on low-carbohydrate diets are able to eat less and feel full and satisfied from the high-protein and high-fat foods that are allowed on low-carb diets. These diets have also been shown to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. So why isn’t everybody going low-carb? Conventional “Wisdom” Meaning that knowledge base that doctors of today who went to medical school yesterday and yesteryear have in their doctor’s bags. Their knowledge is based on studies done in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. It is old! After all, the Atkins Diet didn’t blast off until the 70’s and … Continue reading
