Remembering the True Meaning of Easter

It is important to remember the reasons that we truly celebrate Easter. We celebrate Easter to remember the Atonement, the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ. Christ’s willingness to sacrifice Himself and take upon Him the sins of the world gives us each the opportunity to return to live with him some day. Throughout the year it is too easy to become so wrapped up in the little things going on in your life, that you lose sight of the importance of this gift. I am grateful for the Atonement and the comfort it has brought me in my life. The … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: The Resurrected Body of Christ

Many Christians think of Jesus as a spiritual creature, existing without a body. Of all of the references to Christ’s resurrected, physical body, the scriptures of the New Testament are some of the clearest. Here, He shows His disciples without a shadow of a doubt that, following death, He took up again His physical body. Luke 24 shows the best record of this. As the disciples sat puzzling over the events of the preceding day, the Savior appeared to them. In verse 37, we see that the disciples responded with terror, thinking that Jesus was not a man but a … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Witnesses of the Resurrected Lord

Various witnesses who saw Jesus in His resurrected state. First among them were Mary Magdalene and other women who had come to the tomb to anoint His body for burial. Next were the Apostles of Christ. Their testimonies teach us of Christ, and we, in turn, bear our testimonies to teach others. In the beginning of the first three chapters we read for class this week – Matthew 28, Luke 24, and John 20 – we learn that several women ventured to the tomb to prepare Christ’s body. There, the find not their deceased friend Jesus, but two angels who … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: What Christ’s Resurrection Means to Each of Us

This week’s Gospel Doctrine lesson discusses the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As we ponder this topic, I would first like to address what this significant event means to each and every one of us. Like the Atonement, the events that occurred on the first day of the week many years ago did not affect only the Savior. When He reunited His body and His spirit, He made it possible for each and every one of us to do so likewise. In 1 Corinthians 15:20-22, Jesus is called “the firstfruits” of those risen from the dead. Similarly, … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: “Thou That Destroyest the Temple…”

As the Savior was tried in court, and later as He hung on the cross, His persecutors mocked Him with His earlier words. “Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days,” they taunted, “Save thyself, and come down from the cross.” (Mark 15:29-30) Their choice of words was quite ironic. Earlier in His ministry, the Savior was asked to show a sign of His divinity. He responded, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” (John 2:19) Note that He did not say that He would be the one to destroy the … Continue reading

General Conference: “I Know That My Redeemer Lives!”

In his talk “I Know That My Redeemer Lives!” President Thomas S Monson speaks about the pain of losing loved ones. He speaks about how death affects us all. There will come a point when each of us will die. People often wonder if there is life after death. President Monson tells the story of Robert Blatchford who had written a book discounting Christianity and life after death. After his wife died, he looked at her body and realized that something had changed. He determined that it was her soul. Blatchford realized that there is life after death and came … Continue reading

Emphasize the Spiritual Events of Easter

Easter is one of the most important holidays. It is when we set aside time to remember and celebrate the Atonement and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. These events made it possible for us to repent. They opened the way so that we may return to live with our Heavenly Father again. The events that we remember are so important, but it can be too easy to let them be pushed aside. Children often think only of Easter in terms of the candy, Easter egg hunts and presents received. While these activities are fun, they can distract from the true meaning … Continue reading

An Easter Egg Hunt With A Christian Twist

As children there are few things more exciting than an egg hunt on Easter morning. This year put a religious spin on your hunt and teach your children the reason Christians celebrate the Easter holiday. Use the following list of ingredients to fill your Easter eggs. Each item symbolizes something from Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection stories in the Bible. 3 dimes – Judas received 30 pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14-16) Cracker – last supper (Matthew 26:17-29) Chocolate kiss – Judas betrayed Christ with a kiss (Matthew 26:47-49) Feather – Peter denied Christ three times before the cock crew (Matthew 26:69-75) … Continue reading
