10 Most Common Photo Mistakes Scrapbookers Make (1)

There is no right or wrong way to scrapbook. Layouts are a creative outlet for most, and can be done any way a scrapbooker is inspired to create it. However, the photos the scrapbooker uses, need to be the best quality they can be. Often, they make or break the final layout. Here are five of the top ten most common photo mistakes that scrapbookers make, and how they can be avoided. Forgetting the camera – Alright, we have all done it. Either carry a disposable camera, or purchase one that can fit into your purse. Try to be sure … Continue reading

Biggest Scrapbooking Mistakes – Sihouettes

It was once a very popular technique. In some cases it still can be. But if you are like the majority of scrapbookers who have been scrapbooking more than five years, you know the silhouetting I am talking about. Silhouetting in scrapbooking, means taking your photograph and cutting around an object. It works great if it’s a flower that fills the frame, but when it’s a child (which in most cases it was for me), the end result can have an almost creepy effect on the layout. What I see now when I look back at layouts that I silhouetted … Continue reading

Biggest Scrapbooking Mistakes – Buying Too Much

It’s a scrapbooker’s right to own and use all the latest and greatest products available. However, the problem is, when you buy all these great gadgets, gizmo’s and supplies, are you really using them all? What happens to a lot of scrapbookers, is that a few months or years down the road, we have an accumulation of supplies and products that we might never use again. As I’ve said before, my philosophy is that if you purchase a product, for every dollar spent, one layout has to be completed. Again, that means if I spend $15.00 on a fastener, I … Continue reading

Biggest Scrapbooking Mistakes – Shapes

The fad of cutting everything and anything on a layout into shapes, has long since past. However, if you’ve been scrapbooking for any length of time, you probably have albums full of layouts that contain shapes throughout. It wasn’t like the shapes were limited to squares and rectangles either. Oh no, we had ovals, and circles too. But what was worse was the stars and hearts and other odd shapes we felt the need to crop our precious photos into. Of course not everyone cropped just their photos. Often scrapbookers used special shapes for their journaling, using special templates. Journaling … Continue reading

Biggest Scrapbooking Mistakes – Sticker Sneeze

You can always recognize a scrapbook page from the earlier days when there were limited supplies. Back then, stickers were all the latest craze and there were swaps and RAKS (Random Acts of Kindness) galore filled with stickers and sticker sheets. At that time, you saw a lot of scrapbook layouts with what we have now dubbed “Sticker Sneeze”. Essentially it’s a scrapbook page that has stickers that look like someone just blew all over it. No rhyme or reason to their placement, if there was a blank spot, a sticker was placed there. Gone are the days where stickers … Continue reading

Biggest Scrapbooking Mistakes – Memorabilia

Memorabilia is a must have in any album. Maps from the zoo, a brochure from the science center, an airplane ticket from our trip to New Zealand, it can all be included. What happens when you realize you have too much memorabilia? Well there are several options. You can either pare it down yourself, choose what’s really important. Is it really necessary to include all the postcards and the three different brochures from your vacation? Or can you somehow separate your layouts into a more flowing creation, and include a piece of memorabilia per page? Can you try shrinking a … Continue reading

Biggest Scrapbooking Uh-Oh’s part two

Continuing our discussion of our biggest regrets and blunders we’ve made in our daily scrapbooking, I have a few more to add. You might have different ones, and you might have similar ones, but regardless, we’ve all made them. Silhouettes – Oh how I remember good old silhouettes and I certainly did plenty of them. Often times mine looked like they were coming out of the side of the page or something equally as disturbing. Embellishment Overload – This is something I think many still fall into the trap with. With so many new embellishments as well as types of … Continue reading
