Scriptures that Strengthen Me as a Mother

Being a mother is one of the biggest responsibilities in this life. It is not an easy one. It is stressful, and complicated, and tests your patience like nothing I’ve ever experienced. It is wonderful too, but sometimes, I think we as moms need to be reassured, strengthened, and shown love. Unfortunately, we don’t always get that from the little people we take care of. But, there is one person that is there for us, and that is our Heavenly Father. Today I was thinking about some of the scriptures that bring me strength as a mother. And, I immediately … Continue reading

Doing More than the Minimum

While I enjoy reading the monthly “Visiting Teaching” message, I especially appreciated Sister Beck’s anecdotes in this month’s message. She shares a story about attending a luncheon for Relief Society after completing one of the two assigned readings—either the Book of Mormon or a short history of the church. She had chosen to read the short history to qualify, but as she sat there, she felt that she should have completed the other reading—the scriptures. As LDS women (and men), we often do our best, and that’s absolutely good enough. We’re often hardest on ourselves. But there are times when … Continue reading

Scripture Study 1 Nephi 17:1-6

Laman and Lemuel have been chastened (again) and all is well in the little campsite. Food has been provided to the travelers and they are ready to resume their journey. 1. And it came to pass that we did again take our journey in the wilderness; and we did travel nearly eastward from that time forth. And we did travel and wade through much affliction in the wilderness; and our women did bear children in the wilderness. When I first read this, my thought was, “How terrible to give birth out in the wilderness.” But then I realized, it probably … Continue reading

Focus on the Scriptures with Your Family

Teaching the scriptures to our children is essential. The stories in the scriptures give excellent real examples of how to deal with the situations and trials that your children will face in the world. As a child I loved the Old Testament stories the best, because they were full of adventure. As I grew older I came to love the courage displayed in many of the Book of Mormon stories. The New Testament is wonderful as you learn the parables that Jesus taught while on the earth. One of the reasons that it is so important to teach these stories … Continue reading

Are You in a Scripture Study Rut?

Daily scripture study is a wonderful opportunity to spend time reflecting on the gospel. It is a time when you can learn more about Christ. It is also a time to meditate and bring the spirit into your life. If you find that your scripture study is not as effective as it used to be, you may be stuck in a study rut. You should try to do things a little differently to make the most of your time. The first thing you should do is to pray before and after you read the scriptures. This simple step is easy … Continue reading

Receiving Insight into the Scriptures

I love doing the Scripture Study blogs. I sit down and open up the scriptures online, and I read the words that will comprise the study for that day. As I think about them, I write down the thoughts and feelings that come into my mind, which eventually become the blog. However, my thoughts and feelings are not the be-all, end-all. Each and every one of us was sent to earth with a spark of divinity in us that entitles us to personal revelation. As we contemplate the things of eternity, we will catch glimpse of understanding and greater things … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 11:24-36

Nephi has inquired of the Lord to know the meaning of the vision his father saw. Deep in prayer, Nephi was taken to a high mountain by the Spirit of the Lord and now, with an angel for his guide, is being shown Christ who is to come. 24. And after he had said these words, he said unto me: Look! And I looked, and I beheld the Son of God going forth among the children of men; and I saw many fall down at his feet and worship him. 25. And it came to pass that I beheld that … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 11:12-23

Nephi is conversing with the Spirit of the Lord and inquiring as to the interpretation of the dream Lehi had. 12. And it came to pass that he said unto me: Look! And I looked as if to look upon him, and I saw him not; for he had gone from before my presence. 13. And it came to pass that I looked and beheld the great city of Jerusalem, and also other cities. And I beheld the city of Nazareth; and in the city of Nazareth I beheld a virgin, and she was exceedingly fair and white. 14. And … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 8:12-18

Lehi has gathered his family around to recount a marvelous vision he had in a dream. He was led through a wilderness by an angelic being until he reached a tree filled with wonderful fruit. 12. And as I partook of the fruit thereof it filled my soul with exceedingly great joy; wherefore, I began to be desirous that my family should partake of it also; for I knew that it was desirable above all other fruit. What immediately strikes me about this verse is the desire Lehi has to share this joy with his family. It’s not enough for … Continue reading

Scripture Study 1 Nephi 7:22, 8:1-11

At the end of chapter seven, Lehi offers sacrifices to the Lord to thank Him for the safe return of his sons and of Ishmael’s family. At the beginning of chapter eight, the family prepares for the future by gathering grains and seeds of every kind, until one day when Lehi gathers his family and says: 2. And it came to pass that while my father tarried in the wilderness he spake unto us, saying: Behold, I have dreamed a dream; or, in other words, I have seen a vision. My first thought when I read this verse was to … Continue reading
