Keeping Secrets

Often in marriage, we debate whether or not we should keep secrets from our spouses (much advice says yes, sometimes, I say no), but what about keeping the secrets of your marriage from outsiders? Each marriage has its own secrets, as do individuals in that marriage. They can be as simple as the fact that one spouse is embarrassed about singing in the shower or as traumatic as past sexual abuse. It could be the fact that the marriage suffered and recovered from an affair or that the couple became pregnant before marriage. Whatever the issue, a secret is one … Continue reading

Post Secret – Frank Warren

The cover for the Post Secret book is brown, like mailing paper, with a canceled postcard stamp in the corner. The book is based on Post Secret blog which is a website where people mail in their secrets anonymously. The Post Secret blog and book began with an idea of Frank Warren’s for a community art project. He handed out postcards and told people to write down a secret they’d never told anyone and to mail it to him anonymously. Warren posted the cards on his website. According to the book cover, the project has “grown into a global phenomenon, … Continue reading

What Separates Friends?

When we think of what can separate friends, we might think of time and distance, or busyness or family. But listen to what the bible says can separate friends. Gossip! ‘A perverse man stirs up dissension and a gossip separates close friends,’ Proverbs 16:8. Or this one, ‘He who covers over an offence promotes love but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends,’ Proverbs 17:9. Gossip to our friends about another person, or about our friends to a third party, is a betrayal of trust. Proverbs 11:13 tells us ‘A gossip betrays a confidence but a trustworthy man (or woman) … Continue reading

What Affects Friendship?

Friendship seems to be the ‘in’ topic at the moment. Everywhere I find articles about friendship making friends, keeping friends, letting go of friends, dealing with friends in specific situations. I’ve written several myself on the topic. It all made me wonder why friendship has recently become such a big topic. Is it because people are so pressured for time and time poor in today’s society that relationships, whether that be romantic or friendly relationships are the first to suffer? Is it because people move more often than they did in earlier times and those moves often put people further … Continue reading

Thicker than Water (2005)

“Thicker than Water” was originally a made-for-television movie produced by Hallmark. Natalie (Melissa Gilbert) is a leading lawyer in a high-powered firm. I don’t know if I was supposed to tell anyone or not.” Ah yes, we’ve all found ourselves in the gossip-mill before. It’s funny, or maybe it’s not so funny, that when we hear a piece of gossip we have a tremendous … Continue reading
