Dependence Day

Sometimes we all need to depend on someone else. Today, my daughter was sick with the…well, I don’t think that I want to explain it, actually. I’ve gotten a little coddled by the fact that I have an independent daughter. In the fall, we went through a very difficult period of time when my daughter did not want me to leave, ever. Since I work outside the home part time, this was rather difficult. She has a lovely preschool class and wonderful grandparents who take care of her, but none of them were sufficient for a few months. I despaired, … Continue reading

Student Absences and Make-up Work

This is the time of year for school sickness. Stomach viruses, strep throat, ear infections, and flu are swarming the buildings as we speak. Believe it or not, my county has even seen a few cases of the chicken pox. More and more students are being sent home or not coming to school at all. The nurse’s office at our school is the busiest place in the building. She is continuously taking temperatures and calling parents. Teachers are striving to keep up with which students are sick and need to see the nurse and which ones are just needing the … Continue reading

Holiday Season Sick Days

Eeek! It’s less than two weeks until Christmas! We haven’t been having much fun our house for the last few days. The stomach bug bit us hard. We are camped out in the living room – one boy on the sofa, another on the love seat – trying to make the best of an unpleasant situation. It’s a bad time of year to be sick. People with upset stomachs don’t need … Continue reading

When a Single Mom Gets Sick

The truth is, I was blessed genetically with pretty decent health. I don’t have major aches and pains and illnesses to complain of and my immune system is strong enough to fend off most of the things that come my way. This fortunate reality works well with my other fortunate reality—life as a single mom. I tend to get lulled into a false sense of security, however, and when I do get sick—it makes me feel even more grateful that it doesn’t happen very often! The onset of yesterday’s cold was the first such virus I have had in over … Continue reading

When to Call Out Sick

I’ll admit it — there have been times when I’ve called out sick and was feeling just fine. But there have been just as many times when I’ve dragged myself to work when I should have stayed in bed! They call it “presenteeism” — people going to work when they’re sick. And it’s an epidemic in the United States. As much as 75% of the workforce is willing to go into the office when they aren’t feeling well. But are you really as productive when you’re sick? I’m usually not. The lost productivity from presenteeism can be more expensive to … Continue reading
