Taking Your Baby Out in the Snow

We are in the middle of a slow moving snowstorm, and at least a foot of snow is predicted when it is over. This afternoon, the snow stop falling briefly, and it was the perfect opportunity to take the kids out to play. If you are wondering about taking your baby out in the snow, I have a couple of guidelines to share to make sure that everyone has a great time. First of all, I don’t advise taking a baby out in the snow if he or she is very young. You might want to wait until the baby … Continue reading

Snow End in Site

Overnight and in the early morning, we got hit with a few fluffy gentle inches of snow. I decided to get the shovel and brush out and take care of the long driveway, the car and the steps, cleaning them up. Our house is situated downhill, and it is a minivan, which means that even with a little snow, it isn’t getting up the hill of the driveway. So, even though I am fighting a fever, a sore throat, aches and chills, I thought it was in our best interest to get it cleared. I did a combination technique of … Continue reading

Family Fun in the Snow

It’s Thanksgiving and we already have snow on the ground. I suppose that should come as no surprise considering we live in Wisconsin. Still, I was kind of hoping that Mother Nature would wait until at least December 1st before pelting us with the white stuff. Of course, the thousands of snow lovers who eagerly await the first flake of the season do not share my opinion. They are the ones the Appalachian Mountain Club is welcoming with open arms this season. In fact, this year the club is extending its new family weekend series through the winter with programs … Continue reading

Snow Skiing in the Middle of Summer and Where to Get Bugged Out in the Big Easy

It may be sweltering hot in your neck of the woods, but somewhere in the world people are packing on layers of Lycra under their parkas and getting ready to cut into fresh power on snowy slopes. If would rather glide down a mountain on snow skis than navigate wakes on water skis then consider heading to the Southern Hemisphere this summer to tear down the slopes of Argentina and Chile. Some of South America’s most popular ski resorts, such as Bariloche, Argentina, Portillo, Chile, Valle Nevado, Chile, and Termas de Chillan, Chile (where a new casino and volcano-heated spa … Continue reading

Winter’s the Best with Pets

Like much of the country, this week’s temperatures in Nashville have been very wintery indeed. Once upon a time I vowed never again to live in a climate that had winter. It could be a season in name only. (I grew up in Denver. I chose to go to college at the University of Arizona very much on purpose. It was (a) away from home, and (b) in a nice warm and sunny climate. No more snow!) I successfully managed to uphold my vow for 17 years. I lived in Tucson for five years, Phoenix for six, and Jacksonville, Florida, … Continue reading

Did you have a White Christmas?

We didn’t have a white Christmas but it was a merry one. Quiet, but nice. I hope yours was wonderful. Did you have snow? We didn’t have so much as a flake, but we were okay with that. In fact, it was sunny and must have been about 50 degrees on Christmas. My husband and I sat outside on our deck for a while and he cooked our Christmas ham on the grill. Imagine my surprise yesterday, when the early morning sunshine turned to heavy clouds and cold winds around noon. Imagine my greater surprise when huge white chunks of … Continue reading

Let it Snow?

A couple of days ago, my kids and I were discussing whether we would have a white Christmas or not. It is almost uncanny how we often have just a touch of snow for Christmas, like icing on a cake. Then, we learned that we might actually get some snow this weekend. My little one jumped up and down yesterday morning asking, “Is it gonna snow? Is it? Is it?” I had to wonder what kind of weather we might expect. It’s been rather mild except for the occasional harsh day or night. However, when I stopped in the store … Continue reading

Our First Snow

Today is an exciting day here in Pennsylvania. That is because we are experiencing our very first snow of the season. and not only is it any snow, but it is a gently falling, Christmas type snow that you generally only see in movies and on screen savers. Nestled here in the woods, the snow is creating a magical show for the little ones and myself. My oldest is still in school, and I can just picture him anxiously tapping his foot, waiting for school to let him out into this winter wonderland. Another reason that I am so excited … Continue reading

Digging Out

I confess; I have used this blog to complain about having to shovel my driveway and sidewalk after Mother Nature sent several inches our way—but no more. My whines have been silenced and I am completely humbled by what people living in parts of central New York along the eastern shore of Lake Ontario are dealing with. Can you imagine having your home buried under 110 inches of snow? Or, how about navigating through 9-feet of snow to get to your mailbox? I don’t think many homeowners can fathom dealing with that much snow in such a limited time frame. … Continue reading
