George Clooney the Peacemaker

In 1997 George Clooney starred in a movie with Nicole Kidman called “The Peacemaker.” In the film Kidman plays a nuclear expert and Clooney a Special Forces Intelligence Officer. Both are called to investigate a train crash in Russia that includes a nuclear payload, only neither Clooney nor Kidman’s characters believe the crash was an “accident.” It was a sleeper of a movie, but its title is quite fitting to describe the role Clooney is now playing in the real life drama that involves two rival Hollywood actors unions. The handsome star is pleading with the warring factions to put … Continue reading

“The Grinch” and Grace Get the Go Ahead

“I think one Grinch in town is enough.” That’s the word from a New York State Supreme Court judge who ordered the reopening of “Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas!” despite the ongoing Broadway stagehands strike. Which means as of 11 a.m. tomorrow the show will go on… at least for “The Grinch.” More than two dozen other plays and musicals will remain dark. However, for the thousands of Broadway ticket holders who traveled to the Big Apple for the Thanksgiving weekend the news couldn’t have come at a better time. “We got our miracle on 44th Street,” the … Continue reading

Writers’ Strike—It’s On

I’ve been blogging about this inevitable strike for days now and it’s finally underway. Which means if you live in New York City and are interested in meeting actress/producer/writer Tina Fey, she’s picketing outside of Rockefeller Center right now. Fey is a member of the Writers Guild of America East and has joined about 40 other writers outside the NBC building carrying signs and chanting, “”No contract, no shows!” I’m not sure the 30 Rock star is in the mood to sign autographs, but if you have ever wondered what she looked like in person now’s your chance. You can’t … Continue reading

Newsies (1992)

Musicals used to be all the thing, but we didn’t see too many come out of Hollywood there for a while. When Disney produced “Newsies” in 1992, it was a great reminder of a time gone by when all the best stories were told in song. It didn’t do so well in the box office when it was first released, but it has since become a cult favorite. I personally liked it for its own merits, cult notwithstanding. Christian Bale stars as Jack Kelly, a homeless boy who supports himself as a newspaper boy in New York City. He’s considered … Continue reading

Teacher Strike

Today, on the first day of school in Detroit, Michigan some students came to class prepared, but their teachers did not show up at all. In fact some of them stood outside their buildings watching the children walk by while they held up signs denouncing their unfair wages. On August 27, 2006, about 9,500 teachers associated with the Detroit Federation of Teachers decided that because of multiple issues with the School Board’s proposed contract they would not work rather than give in to what they call unfair demands. According to a Yahoo News article, the proposed contract included “A 5.5-percent … Continue reading
