Making New Year’s Resolutions

Yes, I am thinking about making a New Year’s Resolution.  I know, many people say when you do this, you are only setting yourself up for failure.  But sometimes, you just need something to get you kicked off in the right direction. This year, as with all years in the past, I am resolving to lose weight.  Oh, I know I can do it – I lost 30 pounds three years ago.  And then gained it all back within the stressful last two years of returning to the workforce, moving, and changing jobs twice. But this year, I need to … Continue reading

Get Ready for 100 Pound Loser!

I want to tell you about an ebook coming out on January 1st.  I wage it will motivate you to lose those extra pounds.  My confidence is based on the author, Jessica Heights.  (Her name alone has a confident and famous ring to it, doesn’t it?). Jessica is the author of the blog, Muthering Heights.  She is also a bloggy friend that I hold dear.  We share a quirky introvert thing. Well as much as introverts can share (actually introverts form deep friendships once they get over the initial human contact awkwardness).  At any rate, Jessica has a new ebook … Continue reading

After Christmas Weigh In

Walking toward the scale was like walking the plank.  Good advice went unheard.  Good judgment left at home.  Good intentions were never given a second thought.  The Christmas festivities caused better judgement to take a holiday.  The dessert table was the siren call that caused far too many calories to be consumed.  The scale would reveal the extent of the transgressions.  Wait, shoes must be removed.  Let’s not forget the socks.  Perhaps it would be only to it to subtract a pound for hair.  Teeth.  Teeth have to weigh something and yet do not add to the waistline.  One foot … Continue reading

Lose Weight, Avoid Breast Cancer?

I have already made up my mind that after the holidays, I am dieting.  Of course, I’ve said that on and off now for the last two years, but next June, I turn 50 and I know it will just get harder and harder to lose weight. Today, I read another incentive to help me take the pounds off.  A recent study by Dr. Paul S. MacLean, associate professor of medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center, and colleagues hints to the fact that perimenopausal women may be able to lessen their chances of getting breast … Continue reading

My Insurer Mentioned a Weight Loss App

Does your health insurance company send you helpful little newsletters? Mine does. This time, the newsletter included information about a weight loss app. Health insurance companies have an intrinsic interest in helping their customers be as healthy as possible. My health insurance company sends me newsletters from time to time. The purpose of the newsletters is so the insurer can send customers information and advice that they can use to improve their health and to stay healthy. Insurance companies have an intrinsic interest in helping their customers to have good health. People who are healthy don’t need to visit a … Continue reading

Avoiding the Holiday Pounds

It is now the time of year not to set your clocks back by one hour but to set your scale back by 10 pounds. Welcome to the holidays, where good food, good drink and lots of celebrating can lead to extra weight that you can potentially carry around for years. That extra weight can affect your health.  Don’t Say “I Can’t Eat That” Studies show that when people think of certain foods as “don’t eat” instead of “can’t eat” they tend to avoid them and make healthy choices. The theory is that “can’t” sounds like a punishment whereas “don’t” … Continue reading

Causes for Not Losing Weight

Despite changing your eating habits and exercising on a regular basis, you may be experiencing the frustration of not losing weight or even worse, putting on a few pounds. This can lead you to believe that your fitness changes aren’t really making a difference. But hold on…there may be some explanations for it that you need to explore. For instance, we know that eating salty or sugary foods can put on the pounds. But we fail to recognize other factors that can also contribute to weight gain, with one of them being stress. Yes, stress can cause you to gain … Continue reading

Measure Your Inches Not Your Weight

Most of us, who are concerned about fitness, base it on our weight. We step on the scale (sometimes on a daily basis) and we determine our success by what the numbers say. If they have gone up, we get discouraged (even by one pound) and if they go down (again, even if it’s just by one pound), we are elated. But what the scale says isn’t the only measure of how well we are doing. You could be staying the same, yet losing inches. So be sure to not only consider your weight but your inches. The reality is … Continue reading

How Your BMR Can Help You Lose Weight

Most of us know what BMI (body mass index) is and that it measures your height and weight to determine how much body fat you have. But have you heard of BMR (basal metabolic rate)? This is important to understanding how many calories you should be consuming each day. If you take in more calories than you should, you will gain weight. But if you take in fewer calories than you should, it will interfere with the body’s ability to burn fat. It could also lead to dysfunction in your blood pressure, heart rate and ability to digest foods. So … Continue reading

Extreme Way to Lose Weight: Tongue Patch Diet

I recently learned of an extreme way to lose weight, the tongue patch diet. It is a surgical procedure where a doctor uses prolene mesh; a material used to repair hernias and sutures it to the tongue. This makes eating solid foods very painful, limiting a person’s diet to liquids. The patch usually stays on for no more than a month and according to some doctors, it has had success. There are also claims that side effects have been minimal. There is so much to say about such an extreme and potentially dangerous way to “help” someone lose weight. First … Continue reading
