Warm, Welcoming and Wise

Finally I’ve returned from my various excursions into other areas to come back to the alphabetical marriage blog. I believe we’re up to W. Warm Show your spouse the warmth of your love each day. Welcoming Welcome them with a kiss and a hug when they come home or whenever you have been apart, even if they’ve only been out in the garden for a while. Let them know you’re glad they’re there. Also be welcoming to others and welcome them into your home. As we share our lives with others, they will see the way we are living and … Continue reading

Sometimes, They Just Need a Witness

I find with my children that sometimes they need very tangible things from me: they need me to cook for them or make sure the bills get paid or they need me to buy them new shoes or make sure they get to the dentist. Other times, however, what my children need from me is for me to simply be there, be available and be a witness to the trials, joys and realities of their lives. I actually think that we all often just need someone to witness our lives. Perhaps that is what drives us to establish friendships, stay … Continue reading

The Heart of the Matter

Do you think those around don’t notice your behavior and attitudes? You’d be wrong. They notice more than we realize. Recently a woman I know came to our church. ‘It’s so obvious the love and affection you and your husband have for each other,’ she said later. I tried to think back and work out what could have prompted the comment. Even as I thought about it, I didn’t have a clue what had led to her comment. I couldn’t pinpoint any specific thing we’d said or done. We were just the way we normally are around each other. But … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Doubting Thomas

Usually, when we think of those who did not walk in faith, our minds turn to the disciple Thomas. He proclaimed, “Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.” (John 20:25) However, as I reread the scriptures today, I saw other disciples who were equally doubtful – in fact, all of them! When Mary and the other women left the tomb, they ran to the apostles – to those who served most closely with Christ! … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Testifying of Christ

As I studied Luke 2:15-39 this morning, I was touched by the number of witnesses proclaimed the divinity of the infant Christ. I examined the actions of the shepherds, Simeon, and Anna, all of whom recognized in the babe His true identity. I then pondered how I could and should be like them. The shepherds were the first group I encountered in today’s scripture study. Having been persuaded by the visitation of the Heavenly Host, they decided to go to Bethlehem immediately to see these things for themselves. I love the way the scriptures describe their actions – “they came … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: The Gospel Light the World Did Not Comprehend

One of the things I really love about breaking down the Sunday School scripture study is that it means I can really take the time to relish and pursue different avenues of exploration, rather than simply reading the lesson. When I have several days to read a few chapters or verses, I can involve myself in the footnotes and other resources that I might have available. The down side, of course, is that I only get through a handful of verses at a time, but hey, you can’t have everything. Today, it took me pretty much my whole 30 minutes … Continue reading
