Extreme Makeover: Grocery Bill Edition

29 Oct 2007 03:17 PM

I have been reading all yor blogs for the past week. It's time I added my 2 cents worth. Growing up during the depression, I learned early to save money. Mom made her own soap in those days and I did myself one year when we raised a pig and had all that fat. Couldn't waste it and I wasn't going to eat it. A recent frugality of mine was to save all my apple skins and cores in a zip-loc bag in the freezer. I'm 82 and live with my 101 year old mother. We have dentures and can't chew the skins. When the bag is full, I add water and boil it and strain it and make jelly. I use the recipe on the Certo bottle. I add some green food color and a little mint extract for mint jelly to go with lamb. I add red food coloring and a handfull of red cinnamon candies to make cinnamon jelly. my favorite.
