Sharing a Bathroom with Three Kids

Decorating and organizing your bathroom can be tough, especially since all of the fixtures are solid and cannot really move. However, when you have to share that bathroom between three kids, there can be some very difficult coordination and organizational challenges ahead.

First and foremost, you need to develop a system that will grow with your children. After all, chances are good that you will stay in your home for awhile, or at least long enough for your children to grow and not worry about things being too small or childish for them.

When I was redecorating my children’s bathroom, I first gathered them all together so that we could discuss the ideas that they had. Together they selected the color that would go on the wall. Luckily, there are all girls and they all agreed that pink was the best color for their bathroom.

The hardest part was choosing the shade of pink. My two oldest daughters wanted a fuscia pink but my younger daughter wanted light pink. I told them that they were in charge of figuring all the colors out and I was very impressed with what they actually came up with.

They ended up deciding to paint the wall fuscia and use a light pink sponge painted layer on top. They also decided to buy two shades of pink towels. I was very pleased with how they worked it out.

In addition to the towels, they decided to buy new carpet and a new shower curtain. They chose black and white checkers, which looked really nice together. They also purchased some black accessories for the sink area, like a tooth brush holder, soap dish and water cups.

The next big thing was choosing where everyone was going to put their items. We ended up deciding that the two older girls would get the underneath cabinet under the sink. The youngest girl got the medicine cabinet. That way, everyone had their own space into which they could place their bathroom items, like hair products, make up items, soaps and the like.

Next, the girls decided that they should have their own items for the shower. We went out together to the store and everyone had $20 to buy as many bathroom products of their own. Next, each girl needed a different shelf within the shower area.

The oldest daughter bought the over the door hanging system for her items, The middle daughter liked the corner shelves (mostly because they can fit as many fun bathroom items as possible). The youngest decided to buy a hanging system that went over the faucet.

When all the girls were done with their decorating and satisfied with what they had done with their bathroom, I gave them each gifts – a monogrammed pink towel and robe set with their individual initials on it. The girls though the gifts were so fun and made them feel like little ladies.

Letting the girls decide how to dress up the bathroom was the best way to go about tackling a sticky (and tight) problem. They also now feel like thay have some control over their own space.
