The next time someone at the grocery store asks you if you want “paper or plastic,” go ahead and opt for the plastic. Paper bags may be wonderful for art projects and storing items you are giving away or donating, but plastic bags have a lot of uses. And, if your grocery stores are like mine, then tend to double up the bags, so you have twice as many when you get home.
Whatever you do, don’t throw these bags away. They can be put to the following good uses.
Those plastic grocery bags can:
Earn money at the grocery store. Most stores will pay you anywhere from three to six cents for each bag of your own that you bring in for bagging. I’m not talking about the recycling container for bags at the store. To get the cents back, you need to tell the cashier that you brought your own bags, and he or she will credit them off of your grocery total. It may not seem like much, but it will add up over time.
Be used for diapers. Forget those expensive diaper systems with their expensive refills. a plastic grocery bag works just as well at containing odors. and you can just simply throw it out in the trash, rather than letting the diapers sit and ferment until your diaper unit is full.
Be used in small trash cans. We put one in the small wicker can in our bathroom. When the bag is filled, we simply toss it and insert another. It keeps everything nice and clean, and we are not paying for “wastepaper bags.”
Keep the dust away from shoes and boots that are being stored off-season. There is nothing worse than having a nice pair of shoes covered in dust.
