Special Needs Podcast Roundup – Week of July 12, 2011

There are so many resources out there for parents who have children with special needs. Podcasts are an often overlooked source of information. This week’s Special Needs Podcast Roundup includes: author interviews, a glimpse into the life of a family with nine adopted special needs children, a conversation about stem cells, a parenting course, a lunch chat about a resource center, and more. The Parenting Plate Podcast released an episode on June 7, 2011. This episode has an interview with Jolene Philo, author of the book “Different Dream Parenting: A Practical Guild to Raising a Child with Special Needs”. The … Continue reading

How To Create Your Own Metal Tags (1)

Most scrapbookers are looking for elements or embellishments that coordinate with their layouts. Either the paper that is used or the embellishment is the same color, or theme. Finding metal tags that coordinate with different layouts is difficult. Not all paper manufacturers or companies make metal tags that coordinate with their different scrapbooking lines. So it is up to us to figure out how to customize these fun embellishments to work with our own scrapbook layouts. It is not a very difficult process, but it does take some time and effort to accomplish. Step #1 – Select Your Tags – … Continue reading

Media Review: Adoptive Families Magazine

Adoptive Families is a comprehensive bimonthly adoption magazine which covers all types of adoption—domestic and international, infant and older child, open, semi-open and confidential, and adopting from foster care. I have found the coverage to be very well-balanced among the different types. In the past two years I have canceled several magazine subscriptions because I don’t have time to read them. Adoptive Families, by contrast, is read cover to cover before I go to bed the day it is delivered. The magazine is written almost entirely by adoptive families. There are sections of advice from experts such as counselors, social … Continue reading

I Survived the First Grade Today

Well, I did it. In spite of how often I talk about adoption, I was nervous about going to Meg’s first-grade classroom, where her classmates had been pressing her about whether she was adopted and who her “real” mom was. I’ve done presentations on Korean heritage in the past, sometimes including adoption and sometimes sticking strictly to describing the holiday or customs, (You can read my blog about these presentations by clicking here.) I learned that it’s not easy to decide what’s right for your child, no matter how well-informed you may … Continue reading

Thankfully there is plenty of fun and great laughs to get us through the longer days and summer evenings. I thought I’d leave you with a cute weekend laugh. I have had this posted on a bulletin board in my scrap area for a couple of years and just thought I should share it. If you are a scrapbooker, you surely should … Continue reading

Interview with Prolific Author Shirley Bahlmann

Shirley is a wonderful person. What can I say? I met her when I first entered the LDS literary scene and she welcomed me with open arms, literally. She is a great support for literacy, new and old authors, friends and family. She is a treasure who rules her roost from a small town in Central Utah. From her website we learn: “My stacks of journals, road shows, plays, and skits attest to the fact that I’ve been writing all my life, but I finally got past the “fear” when I came home late one winter night after selling skin … Continue reading
