Buying a Baby Monitor

If you are expecting a new baby or know of someone who is, one of the best purchases you can make is a baby monitor. Although the baby monitor has been around for years, it is still a relatively new technology. With this type of equipment, you can hear your baby from any room in the house.

Let’s say your baby was taking a nap but you want to go downstairs to do some laundry. Nervous that the baby may awaken without your knowledge, you can turn the monitor on in the nursery and carry the receiver with you, being alerted of crying or movement. Some of the things you want to consider before buying a baby monitor include:

•Safety – The number one purpose of buying a baby monitor is for safety. By knowing, the movement of your baby brings peace of mind. Using a baby monitor allows you to relax a bit, trusting the unit to notify you when your baby awakens from a nap. Some monitors are so sensitive that you can actually hear the baby breathing. In fact, some babies with medical conditions that need a little better supervision would benefit tremendously from a baby monitor.

•Multiple Monitors – While a single monitor would work, some parents will choose two. In this case, you could have a backup or be charging one, while the other one is in use. Therefore, if you were to receive more than one baby monitor as a gift from someone consider keeping both.

•Mobility – One of the greatest benefits after safety for a baby monitor is the mobility it provides to you. All you need to do is plug the base unit into the wall outlet and take the receiver with you. This way, you can travel through the house, outdoors, or in the yard, being notified of a waking baby.

•Visual Monitoring – In addition to sound monitoring, you can now purchase television monitors that allow you to see your baby’s every move. In addition to helping you keep tabs on things, you will likely end up with some great comic relief. For instance, you might get to see your baby playing with his or her toes, removing the diaper, trying to find an escape route from the crib, or even rolling over for the first time.

•Sound – It is important to look at a number of brands for baby monitors before buying since not all are created equal. You want a monitor that provides the best possible sound quality and in the case of the television monitor, one that will capture clear images.

•Style – Although you could purchase a traditional style baby monitor, you will also find a wide selection of styles now on the market. For instance, you will find matte, glossy, or other styles that blend in or coordinate beautifully with the nursery. If you have a blue nursery, then perhaps a metallic baby blue would be your best choice. However, if the room were primary colors, a glossy red or orange baby monitor would pop.
