My Day on the World Stage

In 1993 the opportunity arrived for me to shut up or put up. There was a woman by the name, or rather using the name, of Deborah Laake. She’d written a book called “Secret Ceremonies: Diary of a Mormon Wife” – a work of pure and sad delusion. This poor woman, if she told the complete truth, was at the mercy of a father who took unrighteous dominion to new levels. Whatever the perceived truth, she became extremely disenchanted with the church and proceeded to betray every covenant she’d half-heartedly made with the Lord. Where do I come in? Well, … Continue reading

Kinship Foster Care

My last two blogs defined kinship adoption and discussed its advantages and disadvantages. This blog is about the related topic of kinship foster care. Some estimates say that nearly half of the children in foster care are living with relatives. This is very hard to measure, as many families may be taking care of grandchildren, nieces or nephews informally. As with kinship adoption, the major advantage of kinship foster care is that the children are with someone familiar instead of being further traumatized or frightened by being placed with strangers. Many children also find living with relatives to be less … Continue reading

Designing With Stamps On Your Scrapbook Layouts

Have you ever found that you don’t have the right embellishment for a page, or perhaps your background isn’t to your liking? Maybe you have an idea in your head, but you cannot seem to find what you are looking for at the stores or online. Or maybe you just want to be really creative and make your own designs. Well, you can. Using rubber stamps is certainly not a new trend. In fact, stamping has been around just as long as scrapbooking, but many think they aren’t creative or talented enough to try it. I promise that with some … Continue reading

What Homeschoolers Should Know About the Universal PK Agenda

If you don’t know it, Universal PK is a push towards creating free, publicly funded preschools. In other words it’s public school for preschool aged kids. Doesn’t sound too bad right? The NEA loves to tout research on how kids who go to a good preschool tend to earn about $2000 more per year than kids who didn’t and all of these other benefits that kids who don’t go to preschool miss out on. But behind the Universal PK agenda, is a push towards lowering compulsory attendance laws. Fundamentally, the message to parents is: ‘You can’t do this. You’re not … Continue reading

The Truth About Television

Upon hearing the theme song to “Little Einstein’s” my 20 month old twins begin patting and dancing until the exciting climax: ‘blast off’! Surely this is a great show right? It introduces my little ones to classical music and teaches all about music theory. And what about Elmo’s world? That’s educational too! In fact, if I listen to commercials, marketing and advertisements, there are a whole slew of media products designed to boost my twins’ brain power seven fold. (Hey, a foreign language DVD anyone?) I admit that my toddlers watch the occasional T.V. Apparently, we are a rare household. … Continue reading

How to Develop Your Child’s Full Potential

I am slowly learning that parenting is a lifelong learning process. I do not fully understand everything that my children need at their current unique stage. Therefore I try to continually educate myself through different means such as observing other parents, reading parenting books and taking parenting classes now and then. I am really grateful to currently be taking a parenting class based on Chip Ingram’s course titled “Effective Parenting in a Defective World.” Mr. Ingram uses basic information with personal life experience that make this course easy to follow and desirable to follow up with or practice on my … Continue reading
