Caring for a Baby Boy’s Genitalia

Bringing a new baby boy home is the beginning of a wonderful life. Without doubt, babies are incredibly special, unlike any other experience in life. Caring for a little boy requires some different care than that of a little girl, which you will soon discover. Although care is much the same for all baby boys, there would be some slight differences depending on him being circumcised or uncircumcised.

For a male, the penis is covered with foreskin over the shaft and head, which is also called the glans. As a baby and even into toddler yeas, this foreskin will separate from the head, which takes time but is considered normal. This process, which is called retractable, simply involves the foreskin pulling back away from the penis’ head. Again, the way in which the genitalia area is cleaned varies on the child.

If your baby boy has not been circumcised, no special cleaning techniques or supplies are needed. However, while cleaning your baby during a diaper change or bath time, gently clean the area and creases. Now, are your baby becomes a toddler and little boy, the skin is going through this retractable phase. For this, simply allow nature to take its course. When your boy is old enough to start caring for himself, he will need to be shown the right way to care for his uncircumcised penis.

With a circumcised penis, the doctor would have this foreskin removed, which creates a more prominent head. Just as with the uncircumcised penis, the skin and creases should be washed with clean water and gentle soap. Just remember that this area will likely be tender so just be very gentle during the washing process. Sometimes, the doctor will apply a bandage to the area until it heals. In this case, you would dab on a small amount of petroleum jelly after cleaning and air-drying, followed by a new bandage and diaper. Caring for a newborn boy is not difficult but extremely important to eliminate the risk of infection and to promote quicker healing.
