Catch and Release (2006)

Jennifer Garner stars as Gray, a girl whose fiancé has been killed in an accident, in this strange and unsettling movie. The funeral is held amidst all the wedding presents that have been arriving, and Gray isn’t sure how she can handle the strange juxtaposition. How does she prepare herself to deal with his death when she was getting ready to start a life with him?

Going off to the bathroom to seek some solitude, she climbs into the tub and draws the curtain, just wanting everyone to leave her alone. What she doesn’t expect is for the caterer and one of her fiance’s best friends to come in the bathroom and have a strange romantic liaison. After the caterer leaves, Gray pulls back the curtain and gives the friend, a no-good bum by the name of Fritz, the evil eye. How could he do that, at the funeral?

Realizing she can’t afford the home she was planning to share with her husband on just her salary, she moves in with her fiance’s other best friends, Sam and Dennis. For some reason, Fritz insists on sticking around too, and soon Gray realizes why. Her fiancé fathered a child with another woman, and Fritz wants to help her deal with that discovery. In the process, she and Fritz start having feelings for each other.

I was really put off by many elements of this film. Gray didn’t have any support system of her own – she’s relying on her fiance’s friends for everything, and she was almost orphan-like in her solitude. I had a very difficult time accepting Fritz as a romantic hero, knowing what he did in the bathroom. I also didn’t like how quickly Gray moved on to a relationship with him.

This is definitely going to be one of those movies I tell you to skip. Life is short – don’t waste it on this PG-13 film. Instead, how about watching:
