Celebrations and Parties for No Good Reason!

Sure, we have holidays, and birthdays, and graduations–but do we really have enough celebrations to keep life peppy and purposeful? One of the grand things about family life is that we can come up with our own celebrations; we can have those typical holiday parties and such, but we can also have parties for no obvious reason whatsoever…

My eldest daughter has appropriated one particular date of the year as “her” day. Several years ago, when she was still in middle school, she had a particularly pleasant, happy and lucky day and ever since then, she celebrates that date in the calendar with a day she has named after herself. Now, this child is turning 18 in a matter of days and will soon be heading off to college and she still celebrates this day–her friends make her cards and she takes everyone out for ice cream or coffee. It is just an ordinary day that she has turned into something special with her made-up holiday, and she has found plenty of other people eager to play along.

Who is to say that we all cannot do the same? Why not have a party for no reason or come up with your own family celebrations at times when you need them the most? While there is definitely something wonderful about the shared community and camaraderie that comes with shared national holidays and birthdays, it is also fun to have parties for no reason, throw an impromptu celebration just because, and bring a little more fun, play and celebration into everyone’s daily lives.

I would love to hear from others who already have some fun made-up family holidays or parties for no reason in particular–it might spur the rest of us into getting a little creative and coming up with our own reasons to party…
