Displaying a Collection

collection of calla If you have several things that you would like to display around your home but don’t know where to begin? Accent pieces can really give a living space the final finish. Before you start arranging an rearranging your stuff until it looks good, why not take a look at a few guidelines?

Find a spot to group your items. If they can’t be hung, look for a table or a chest to group them. This will give you more impact over scattering the objects around your home.

Groups of objects generally look better when they are in odd numbers. Odd number add interest and don’t seem so staged. Try mixing three vases of varying sizes, five candles, etc.

Avoid a lined up look in your display by varying the height of the objects. If you have three pitchers that are all the same size, for example, place them on stacked books.

Having a mirror or a colorful print directly behind the collection can also give a variety of scales as well as add some visual height.

Decide what it is about the pieces that you would like to accentuate. If you are going for shape, then group objects that are the same color. If you want to draw attention to color, then group objects together that are of the same hue.

White and cream colored objects will look good with any other color. Black works well with deep colors, such as red or orange.

Small objects, such as small carved figures or seashells can get dusty very quickly. It is best to keep them clean by placing them in a glass-fronted cabinet for display. These objects can be nestled in a deep tray to keep them from going every which way.
