Let’s face it; even if your baby daddy is not an immature douchebag and your parents haven’t kicked you to the curb for having unprotected sex, getting pregnant while you are still a teenager is not going to be problem-free.
So what of the teens moms, who don’t have a network of family and friends to rely on for support? Their rainbow/unicorn/puppy dog dreams typically shatter much quicker following the birth of their babies.
Just ask Amber Portwood.
The Indiana mom got pregnant while she was still in high school, but instead of giving birth, completing the credits needed to graduate and making the most of a less than ideal situation, Portwood decided to sell her soul to the devil.
Ahem… I mean, become a reality TV star.
Three years ago Portwood swung a deal with MTV to have her life chronicled on “16 and Pregnant,” a reality TV series which documents the struggles that go along with being a teen mom. Little did Portwood know that participating in the TV project would eventually lead to her allegedly try to commit suicide.
Hmmm… let’s see. I don’t have a stable home life. My parents are dealing with their own personal dramas, including recovering from substance abuse, my baby daddy is a schmuck, I’m a high school drop-out and I suffer from bipolar disorder. Being on MTV will surely be the solution to all of my problems.
Unfortunately, Portwood learned the (very) hard way that collecting $140,000 per season from a major cable network could not save her from her self destruction.
According to news reports, Portwood is currently recovering in an Indiana hospital following an alleged suicide attempt. The teen mom’s brother blames her baby daddy, Gary Shirley for driving her to the edge. Shirley is the same guy whom Portwood plead guilty to beating earlier in their relationship.
Reports say Portwood was found on her couch by EMTs on Tuesday drifting in and out of consciousness with a rope tied around her neck. According to police reports, Portwood was rushed to a local hospital, where she allegedly admitted to taking “a lot of pills.”
And smack in the middle, is an innocent toddler, who didn’t choose to be a part of any of this drama.
