DVD Easter Eggs

Do you know about all of the hidden features on your DVDs? This website will show you where the best little treasures are to be found.

You may not be familiar with the term Easter Egg. It is generally used to indicate something that a programmer intentionally hid within a program. The probable first Easter Egg ever was in an Atari 2600 video game called Adventure. Upset that they wouldn’t be given any credit for designing the game, the programers hid a secret message listing their names. The message could only be revealed when the player retrieved a secret “dot” and brought it to a certain piece of landscaping in the game.

Nowadays, Easter eggs are quite common in video games and have been raised to an almost standard for DVDs. Practically every DVD out there that was made in the last few years has at least one Easter Egg on it. Many DVDs have several. Finding these Easter Eggs on your own can be a lot of fun. So can reading about other people’s finds and trying them out for yourself on your own DVDs.

DVD Easter Eggs is a website community that allows you to do just that. A quick visit to this site, and you can find Easter Eggs that are recently added, or search for eggs by DVD title. There is everything there from Ren and Stimpy to Jane Eyre. Just a warning, finding all of these eggs can be addicting, so if you have a large DVD collection, be prepared to spend quite some time with your remote.

Each egg has its own rating, based on visitor feedback on the site. Some DVD Easter Eggs are truly amazing, while others, well, let’s just say they were hidden for a reason.

Here is an example of a behind the scenes clip that can be revealed on the Dances with Wolves Extended DVD:

“From Side Two of Disc One’s main menu, highlight “Play Movie” and press up to highlight a picture of an Indian on a horse. From here, successively press right to reveal three additional pictures on the menu. Clicking on each of these four symbols will lead you to a behind-the-scenes video clip.”
