Genealogy Podcast Roundup – Week of July 2, 2012

Once a week, the Genealogy Podcast Roundup brings you brand new episodes of your favorite genealogy podcasts. This is a good place to find genealogy podcasts that are new to you, and to find podcasts that do not always discuss genealogy topics, but have for one, random, episode. Family Tree Magazine released their episode for June of 2012 on June 27, 2012. This episode is hosted by Lisa Louise Cooke. Diane Haddad explains how to find archived genealogy blog posts on any subject. Gena Philibert Ortega shares ideas from her new book “From the Family Kitchen, Discover Your Food Heritage … Continue reading

Captain America: The Noblest Avenger

“Avengers, Assemble!” With these words, Captain America calls together the many scattered members of Marvel Comics’ crime-fighting squad. It’s appropriate, then, that Captain America is the subject of Marvel Studios’ last superhero flick before next summer’s “Avengers” ensemble piece. When first perusing the list of this summer’s comic book films I figured I’d give “Captain America” a pass. The straight-laced always-been-a-do-gooder Steve Rogers (the Captain’s alter ego) has less character development than some of his more conflicted counterparts, and thanks to an overabundance of History Channel specials on the topic I’m currently experiencing a little of World War II-era ennui. … Continue reading

Guide to the Rotavirus Vaccine

When it comes to your baby, I am of the mindset that the more information you have at hand, the better chance you have of making the right decision for your baby. Immunization is a highly debated topic among some. Many parents choose not to vaccinate and are trying to enact laws that make it illegal for a child to be refused private daycare because of lack of immunization. Other parents believe wholeheartedly in the power of vaccinations to protect children from potentially fatal diseases and oppose measures that would allow non-vaccinated children to be enrolled in private day care … Continue reading

Book Review: Adoption is a Family Affair–What Family and Friends Must Know

Prolific adoption writer Patricia Irwin Johnston is herself an adoptive parent of three. Her husband and sister-in-law were also adopted. Pat has been a writer, speaker, educator and advocate on adoption topics for nearly 20 years. While moderating an internet support group for waiting parents, she found many prospective adoptive parents reporting insensitive comments and myths about adoption that they were hearing from family members. Many waiting parents also noted that people didn’t seem to know what to say when they announced that they were adopting, and that before and after the baby arrived they didn’t have the traditional supportive … Continue reading

Viewing “The View” from a Different Angle

They’ve tried doing the show with a loud-mouthed dictator at the helm. And prior to that they tried to keep audiences while a self-absorbed, shoe-loving diva sat at the table. Now “The View” is trying a different tactic to score viewers–give fans V.I.P. backstage access to the show. Producers say it has never been done before (at least on their show) and so come Memorial Day the chatfest will make history by airing an unusual experiment that will give viewers a chance to see what happens behind the scenes at the daytime talk show. According to ABC bigwigs, in two … Continue reading

Book Review–Kimchi and Calamari

My last blogs have featured adoption books for young children. I’m pleased to be able to talk about one aimed at the middle-school crowd. This age group is often hard to find books for. Parents want books that introduce adoption themes so that their kids can feel that there are other kids like themselves and also to spark discussion between parent and child. But most books are either children’s picture books, or teen novels dealing with heavy themes like child abandonment and searching, such as Throwaway Daughter. Kimchi and Calamari also touches on these themes, but in a light-hearted way. … Continue reading

The Natural Response of a Thankful Heart

The natural response of a thankful heart is giving. Giving praise to God for what He has done, certainly. But also giving to God’s work so that the gospel can continue to spread throughout the world and giving to help those in need. The trouble is with so many worthy people, charities and causes how do you decide which ones to give your time, money and gifts to support? The whole issue of giving, raises questions about why a person should give, how much they should give, where should you and I direct our giving to and how can we … Continue reading

Hotels and Daylight Savings

Tomorrow is my favorite day of the year. No kidding. It’s not my birthday. It’s not my anniversary. It’s not the day I gave birth to my first child. It is the day we set our clocks back an hour, which means I get an extra hour of sleep. And, that (at least to me) is a gift you can’t put a price tag on. Think about it; how many times during the course of a year do we wish out loud for more time? Tomorrow is the day most of us are granted an extra 60 minutes. Free time—literally. … Continue reading
