Field Day

Today was Field Day at school. I didn’t know what to expect, but I knew that the school had been planning for it for a long time. Jessie’s teacher and I talked about the day weeks ago. Mrs. Hicks was concerned about the logistics of getting two classes of preschool students across the street to the high school field. She was hoping for a lot of parental involvement. Mrs. Hicks was grateful that the babies were scheduled to be on the field at 8:30 so they would be the first ones to use the bounce houses. Since these children were so little, there were not many activities they could do other than the bounce house.

I did not order a special Field Day t-shirt for Jessie. I did dress her in the assigned yellow color, however. I dressed Baby E in yellow and wore the only yellow shirt I own. We were ready for a fun day. I checked in at the office as a Field Day Volunteer and then we joined Jessie’s class in the cafeteria. We all walked to Jessie’s room and the parents watched the children say the pledges and sing their morning songs.

We went across the street to the field at 8:30. The bounce houses were not even inflated. Around 10am we finally got a turn in the bounce castle. The other two bounce structures remained unused and we were not allowed to play there because they were scheduled for other grades. Why no one respected the 8:30 schedule for these children is beyond me. The children bounced for a while and then we gathered up back across the street. The children sat nicely on the ground outside the cafeteria for snack and then they went home.

This was the most poorly planned event. I was very disappointed.
