Admit it; at some point in your life you have picked the brain of a flight attendant en route to your vacation destination searching for recommendations regarding where to eat, shop and suntan. Don’t worry; at some point just about everyone does it. In fact, so many travelers query their flight attendants on their top picks of destination cities that one airline has devoted a portion of their website to provide free sightseeing advice.
Delta Air Lines has just launched a video showcase called “Delta Siteseer.” It includes 10, five-minute Internet “travelcasts” where flight attendants talk about their favorite attractions in a given city. Destinations range from New York and Los Angeles to Mumbai, India, and Seoul. For example, one flight attendant who travels to L.A. regularly suggests travelers make a pitstop at Pink’s, a Hollywood institution that’s famous for its hot dogs and for attracting celebrities. One travelcast from a trip to Brussels includes video of architectural standouts, a chocolate shop and a look at an environmental day in which no cars were allowed in the city. In another video, a Salt Lake City-based flight attendant filmed her hike along Mount Inwangsan in Seoul, and a trip to a fortuneteller in the city.
The airline says the same information featured on the website could be found in traditional guidebooks, but this offers a way for travelers to get the information without having to flip through pages and pages of material. What’s more, flight attendants’ unique jobs make them sightseeing experts so why not capitalize on their travel adventures?
In addition to providing input from flight attendants, Delta is now allowing other company employees to submit their picks. For a limited time the airline is giving any Delta worker a chance to post an introduction video and participate in the travelcast program. As for the videos posted by the actual flight attendants, the airline gives each worker a camera and recording tips, but that doesn’t mean the end result is perfect. Some videos are shaky and on occasion appear dark.
