Grandparents & Baby

Reverend Crutchfield commented on Daddy Time about the grandfather time that he enjoys with his grandchild and he made a great point. Grandparents are vital in your baby’s development and what’s more – the enjoyment is shared equally on both sides of the fence. When our daughter was a baby, we lived in Virginia – thousands of miles from grandparents on all sides of the family.

My hat is off to the three grandmothers that made their pilgrimages out to visit us so regularly that our daughter knew them all on sight and even developed special pet names for them. Grandparents in the life of the baby offer continuity and a special bond that they will not develop with any other adult in their lives.

Great-Grandparents

We are equally blessed with having two great-grandparents actively living and involved in the lives of their great-grandchildren. My husband’s grandfather, currently 95, enjoys the babies more than any of the rest of us put together. Currently, my 9-month-old nephew enjoys holding court in his great-grandfather’s lap. Because my mother-in-law looks after him while his mother is working, the baby spends five days a week being able to visit and see his great-grandfather.

Lunchtime is a hoot because granddad will sit down at the table with his meal and Tristan settles into his booster high chair and he watches granddad eat with absolute relish. Granddad talks to him and Tristan babbles back. They are quite content to spend their lunch hour together in random babble and lunchtime comments.

Play Time

Playtime is another great time for baby and grandparents because grandparents appreciate the passage of time. They appreciate the time spent with their grandchildren and they display a festive enjoyment of everything they do whether they are yowling in frustration or giggling at some new discovery. The only thing we have to watch out for is the baby-wearing granddad out – which he does. It’s cute to watch them play for 30 to 45 minutes each afternoon and then both of them go off for their nap.

Granddad is a treasure and he’s indulged 2 great-grandbabies previous to Tristan and he delights in interacting with Tristan now. Our family counts ourselves especially blessed to have Granddad in our lives and especially in the lives of the babies.

Grandparents and great-grandparents are a treasure – what are some special memories you have of your grandbabies or your babies’ relationship with their grandparents?
