Habits and Goals

It is nearly the end of the first quarter. This is a great time to check in on your goals and your family’s goals. You may want to incorporate this into your family home evening or your family council meeting on Monday. As you consider your goals and the changes you have or have not made you should look at what is preventing you from achieving your goals.

In order for goals to be successful you really need to change your habits. This is the key to changing your behavior. If your family is working on having family prayer and scripture study, consider the things that have been preventing you from doing it. If you are planning on completing it in the evenings are you falling short because you are too tired or does it get too hectic with all the homework that you need to get done? You may need to change the time you do this or change other habits to make it work for your family.

If you are working on losing weight, but you are having difficulty fitting exercise into your schedule, so you will need to do something to change your habits with exercise. Similarly if you are trying to stop a behavior, you will need to replace that behavior with a new one. If you want to stop snacking, you may want to drink a glass of water before you eat anything. It really depends on what your habit is, and then finding an easy positive replacement.

Goals that focus on increasing your spirituality are especially important. It really does help every aspect of your life when you are working on your relationship with God. Forming a steady habit of scripture study and personal prayer will help you to meet the daily challenges of life. While you do want a habit of studying daily, you do not want to fall into a rut. The scripture study needs to remain meaningful in order to be as effective as possible.
