Here is one holiday that we won’t be celebrating in our home.
Apparently, today is a day that many people the world over are celebrating the recreational use of pot, sharing recipes and techniques in person and through the Internet. How do I know this? Not because I am part of any subculture or anything. In fact, the drugs I am on consist of just three: A pre-natal vitamin, an over-the-counter allergy medicine (for the next few weeks), and chocolate.
I know this because I bumped into an acquaintance, one of those friend of a friend folks whom I have seen maybe twice before. She told me that she was on her way to the store to pick up munchies for “420.” Huh?
Naively, I asked what 420 was. The event is known as “Happy 4/20” or “420 Day.” At first I regretted finding out. Somethings, it seems, are better off knowing nothing about. But then I thought, I would rather know about something like this so I could keep it out of my home. I debated writing this blog, because I certainly don’t want to promote drugs. I respect the fact that Families.com is a family-friendly site. It is one of the main reasons I am so proud to be part of this, our extended community here. But then I thought that knowing about this holiday may help keep drugs out of your home.
Don’t these people know that pot is an illegal drug? Perhaps that is why 420 is so centered on the home, as if it were nothing more than a Super Bowl party.
For us, I think we will take advantage of today to talk to our children about the use of drugs, the people who use drugs recreationally, and the people who try to persuade others to use them as well. My children are still young and sheltered, but I know that we won’t always be able to protect them as fiercely as we do today.
What do you think?
