Husbands & Barbecues

There are a lot of traditional roles we assign to husbands and wives in a marriage. Whether they are assigned by our pop culture or by our family traditions, we assign them. One of the more popular husbandly roles is that of barbecue king. Is it the fire that attracts our husbands or the smell of grilled meat? Who knows? But my husband who loves to do his cooking whether he’s in the kitchen or out at the barbecue.

Sunday Afternoon Grills

When we think of the barbecue, we think of it as a time to bring our family closer together. Our husbands and fathers pioneer this exploration into family unity as they hold court at the grill. Modern barbecues don’t require charcoal with the rising popularity of the propane grill. This can make for a cleaner burning grill without an overwhelming amount of smoke to drive away the huddles of family around the grill.

Grilling can include steaks, chicken, ribs, pork and more. One of our favorite things to tuck onto the grill to cook is a green wrapped ear of corn. The baked potato is another fabulous addition. Families love to bring big bowls of fruit, potato salad along with fruit drinks, cold water and iced tea. Imagine, if you will, the family gathered on the back porch while the kids romp and play in the yard and the food cooks on the grill.

King of His Domain

The husband that barbecues is the king of his domain. He is providing sustenance for his family, much the way of the hunter of days of old. He enjoys the looks of pleasure on the faces of those who are enjoying eating the bounty he provides. He also enjoys the sound of the roasting meat and the singular scent that is the barbecue.

What better day to celebrate the barbecue and our husbands than on Father’s Day when we thank them for their contributions to our family, our lives and our marriages? Whether your husband is a father or not and whether your parents are joining you so that grandfathers are being equally celebrated on this day that we honor all fathers – gather around the barbecue and enjoy your husband’s survey of his domain. Enjoy the bounty he provides and celebrate a day that while we are honoring fathers is an embrace of the family and the lives that have been intertwined together.

What is your favorite thing to barbecue?
