Inside Fun for Hot Days

We’ve had a few very hot days in Colorado lately. While are summers are generally warm, they are usually not hot. In fact, most houses in our area don’t even have air conditioners. I know we are spoiled with our normally mild summers.

Here are some fun inside ways to escape the summer heat, no matter where you live.

Libraries – Summer programs at libraries offer all sorts of story times, puppet shows, movies, and craft projects. While the kids are being entertained their parents might even be able to browse through some books or magazines.

Bookstores – Some of the major bookstores also do story times and craft hours. Most of them are free, or have a small fee to cover craft supplies. Even if you don’t sign up for special activity bookstores are great air-conditioned fun. Settle down with a stack of picture books. Find a stack of books for yourself and let the children play with the computers, train tables, blocks or whatever else is available. Buy a lemonade or Italian soda in the café before you leave.

Craft and Building Supply stores – You can sign up for all sorts of free and inexpensive lessons and project days. You and the kids can learn how to draw, decorate cakes, cross stitch, make jewelry or bird houses.

Movies – A lot of the theatres offer special prices on kid movies on certain days. They aren’t the latest releases, but are still worth seeing. One of local theatres offers .75 cent movies on Tuesday.

Museums – Many offer free or reduced prices on one day a week. It’s a nice break to stroll through the air-conditioned halls admiring the artwork. More and more museums offer children’s areas and art work that can be touched. Bring some drawing pads and let the kids try to copy a few pictures.

Do any of you have other ideas for keeping cool?
