Ironing: The Chore we love to hate

Well, the title may not be completely accurate. There are people who actually enjoy ironing. I just don’t happen to be one of them. I guess I don’t really hate it (although my recent bought with ironing did inspire the title) but let’s just say, it’s not my favorite thing to do. I know I’m not alone.

In my case, it may be that I’m just not that great at doing it. I tend to burn myself and my clothes and those stubborn wrinkles seem to get the best of me. Wash and wear works for me.

However, there are some products and some tips that will help make ironing a little simpler. Steamers aren’t new but they seem to be becoming more popular. Probably because people are so busy and maybe because ironing seems to have become a lost art. June Cleaver wouldn’t have any of it, what with her perfectly pressed dresses and her precisely coiffed hair, but today’s mom has a bit more on her plate. Most of us don’t have an entire day to devote to ironing.

Also, there are some simple ways to help avoid burning clothes when you do pull out the trusty iron. First, always check the setting before turning on the iron. Even if you distinctly remember having set it to silk, it may have been bumped or changed by another family member. By checking first and making sure it is set appropriately, you won’t have to worry about whether it has cooled down enough to begin ironing. Another handy trick is to place something light such as a pillowcase over a garment to help protect delicate fabrics.

Here’s another great use for your iron: removing wax from fabrics. Place an old towel over the affected area and press. The wax will melt and stick to the towel (just make sure you don’t get it on the face of the iron).

If you need to clean the faceplate of your iron, try heating it up and running it over an old towel. For some substances, it’s best to clean the iron when cool. Try a product like Goo Gone or Jig-a-loo.
