Key Chain Crafts for Kids

Even if your kids don’t really need key chains yet, they may still like to collect them. At our elementary school, the trend seems to be having as many key chains as possible hanging from book bags, backpacks, purses, and jackets.

Laura Torres shared a zipper pull craft a while back that can also be easily adapted or used as is for a key chain. You can also make a similar style using plastic tops from soda bottles. You can find plain key rings at most any discount store, craft shop, or super center. Your kids can also make other key chains to display or give away:

Shower Curtain Ring Key Chain

You will need a wire shower-curtain ring for this project. They snap open and closed, so they’re easy to attach to backpacks or belt loops. To decorate, braid three lengths of narrow ribbon together and then thread the shower curtain ring through the spaces in the braid. Knot the ends and trim any excess after tying. Slide on a key ring and work it through the ribbon to keep it in place. Quick, easy, and inexpensive!

Beaded Bracelet Key Chain

String selected beads onto a piece of elastic cord. Slip on a key ring. Tie the ends of the cord and remove excess. Wear as a bracelet or use it as a colorful addition to any key chain collection.

Key Ring Key Chain

Slide one small key ring through another larger one. Decorate only the large ring. Cut neon straws into tiny pieces and slide them over the ring alternating colors randomly or creating a pattern. You can also loop several key rings of different sizes together.

Charm Key Chain

As above, slide one small key ring onto a larger one. Add a cute charm such as those made for charm bracelets to the larger ring. Add more than one if you like and continue adding to it.
