Lift-the-Flap Halloween Books

Young children love to guess and they love lift-the-flap books. We had Boo Who? A Spooky Lift the Flap Book by Joan Holub when my boys were little and they loved it.

I think what kids really love is so guess correctly. They love be right. Each page in the book has a fun and simple riddle to read, and a flap to lift to solve the riddle. These riddles are quite simple. It’s no surprise that it’s a ghost who says “boo” or that a witch is the one in the point hat. The book also includes Halloween standards such as spiders, skeletons, mummies, and a black cat. All the illustrations are very friendly and non-threatening. Even the skeleton looks like he wants to be your friend.
Kids will especially love the last riddle that show their reflection dressed up as the “Scariest Monster Ever”.

The flaps aren’t that sturdy, but hold up to preschoolers who know not to yank and tear.

Who Said Boo? A Lift the Flap Book by Phyllis Root has sturdier flaps. This book’s illustrations are not quite as friendly. They are a little more spooky, but not really frightening. Some children may worry about all the eye’s on dark pages. They are just pictures of staring eyes, you don’t know who they belong to. In this story, a vampire hears someone say “boo” and tries to find out who. The book has simple rhymes like “Was it the Ghost? No I’m making toast.” The book also features standard Halloween characters like skeletons and ghouls. What makes this book so cute is that at the end all the characters realize it was a tiny mouse that said “boo”. All the Halloween characters jump into an armchair and say “Eek”.
