Low (And No) Cost Adverting For Your Home-based Business – Part II

Here are a few more ways to save on advertising your home business.

Cold Calls– Some people prefer to do mass mailings. Personally, I think it’s a better idea to qualify your prospects. And although I don’t particularly like calling people on the phone, in the long run I’ll save on postage by sending materials to those who have expressed at least a passing interest in my services. And even though some people will say they are interested just to get you off the phone, you’ll still fair better than mass mailings in my opinion. A lot depends also on what type of business you’re in. Again, using myself as an example, as a writer trying to sell my services to the business community, it takes just a minute or two for me to call the corporate communications or marketing department and ask if they use freelance writers. If they say no I can either thank them for their time and hang up or try to sell them on the idea. Well, I’m not much of a salesman so in most cases I check them off and go on to the next person on my list. Unless they express an interest, even a remote interest. For instance, I contacted the corporate communication department of one of our local hospitals. The person I spoke with told me they “very rarely” use outside writers. “But”, she added, “why don’t you send in your brochure and business card to the director in case she may need a writer.” Even though this is a remote chance, I sent in the information because who knows what may happen in the future. Perhaps it will turn into a once a year contract. And when someone expresses an interest, I try to put my package in the mail the same day or at the very least the next business day. While I’m still fresh in the prospect’s mind.

Speaking Engagements, seminars, demonstrations and teaching gigs– This is an excellent way to advertise your business- if you’re not afraid to speak in front of a crowd. As an added bonus, unless you are putting on a free seminar or class, you’ll make money for your time.
