Family Tree Magazine Picks 101 Best Websites of 2010

There are a plethora of genealogy related websites out there, and you cannot possibly test out all of them yourself. Sometimes, it’s nice to get an expert opinion about which sites are good, which are only okay, and which are so bad that they should be avoided completely. Family Tree Magazine came up with a list of their picks for the top 101 genealogy websites. Family Tree Magazine was founded in 1999. It is America’s #1 family history magazine. It covers a variety of topics that would be of interest to genealogists, from tips for genealogy research, to ideas for … Continue reading

Exercise and Music

What kind of music do you listen to while you workout? A new study says the type of tunes that play on your iPod as you run (or participate in other cardio exercise) influences your physical endurance. The new research, which is set to appear in the Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology, is part of a 20-year study highlighting motivational qualities of music in sport and exercise. The findings illustrate the benefits associated with exercising in time to music. In one part of the study 30 participants exercised on a treadmill while listening to songs by pop stars such … Continue reading

Something is Better than Nothing

In light of the new recommendations just issued by the federal government regarding the amount of exercise Americans should be completing on a weekly basis I thought it would be interesting to note the results of a new recent study done by researchers at Louisiana State University as it might make you couch potatoes feel a bit better. Whereas the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says adults should be participating in at least 2.5 hours a week of moderate-intensity physical activity, researchers at LSU maintain that even 10 minutes of exercise a day can improve your health. Book Review: Adoption is a Family Affair–What Family and Friends Must Know

Prolific adoption writer Patricia Irwin Johnston is herself an adoptive parent of three. Her husband and sister-in-law were also adopted. Pat has been a writer, speaker, educator and advocate on adoption topics for nearly 20 years. While moderating an internet support group for waiting parents, she found many prospective adoptive parents reporting insensitive comments and myths about adoption that they were hearing from family members. Many waiting parents also noted that people didn’t seem to know what to say when they announced that they were adopting, and that before and after the baby arrived they didn’t have the traditional supportive … Continue reading

Home Week in Review: July 23 – 29

Well, once again the Home Blog started and ended the week on similar topics. Three Tips for Staging your Home offered some tips for preparing a home for sale and linked to other articles on staging tricks and techniques. Rounding out the week was “Can You Flip a House?” an article that discussed purchasing property to renovate for re-sale. Rehabbing used to be a popular term for this process but “flipping” seems to be the common description today for buying, fixing, and selling quickly to maximize profit. Staging is a good idea when flipping a home too. Moving on to … Continue reading

Weaning: The Introduction

I have written so much on breastfeeding for families.com that I think they could start their own little breastfeeding library between my blogs and the blogs of others who have also written on breastfeeding. However, I have focused a lot on how to get started and deal with problems. Indeed, this seems to be a much bigger issue for most women. However, someone recently pointed out to me that weaning a baby would be a welcome addition to the baby blogs. Sometimes weaning is from the breast to a bottle so that mom can go back to work. Other times … Continue reading

Saving Money On Groceries part one

There’s no doubt about it – groceries are expensive. You figure the average household shops once a week, with a smaller percentage shopping twice a week. That doesn’t account for all the stops to Wal-mart, the drugstore or anywhere else extra people purchase their groceries! Gas stations are a HUGE money waster – but they have that name “convenient mart” – Convenient yes, cheap – no way! I’d love to play the grocery game but for a long time it was not available in my area. It might not be available to you either. I can surf the net for … Continue reading
