Overnight Backpacking Adventures

If you have always enjoyed daytime backpacking, finding trails that meander to interesting places so you can enjoy nature, you might think about advancing to an overnight backpacking adventure. While an overnight trip does not necessarily mean significant differences, you would need to consider some things. We do recommend that you take an overnight trip with people you know who also want the same experience. In addition, we recommend you take special training to make your adventure fun and safe.

For instance, most cities offer outdoor clubs. If you are not sure where to find one, check your local newspaper, yellow pages, or talk to someone at a sporting good store. In most cases, backpacking and hiking gear stores have a list of organizations, along with people interested in the same thing. Even a short workshop would be beneficial, ensuring issues specific to safety are covered.

If you want to stay close to where you live, get your hands on a current, regional hiking guide and map from your local outfitter or check online. With this, you can find a great backpacking site that offers camping sites as well. Another possibility is to contact the local parks and recreation department. They can provide you with suggestions based on your specific interests, as well as skill level. Then, you can contact wild refuges and the Bureau of Land Management for information as well.

Although environment will vary from one state to the next, you will need to think about things such as the weather, regulations, fire, and so on. With an overnight backpacking trip, you never know when you will be exposed to rain, wind, snow, or extreme heat. Being prepared is your best option. Of course, it is very important that you understand the rules and regulations for the area you plan to backpack and camp in that these too vary. As an example, some sites might allow you to camp right by the water whereas other sites may have strict, designated campsites. In addition, some regions might allow you to go off-trail while others want you to stay only on marked trails.

An overnight backpacking adventure will be an exciting time that enhances your interest in backpacking. You will have the chance to experience nature in a new light, sleeping in the wilderness and then waking to a beautiful day of backpacking. Most people who go on overnight backpacking trips agree that it becomes a wonderful addiction. When shared with family or friends, the experience is even greater.
