People’s Choice Award Winners

Did you get a chance to catch the People’s Choice Awards last night on CBS? The People’s Choice Awards lets you the viewing public chose your favorites from television, music, and movies.

People’s Choice was the brainchild of creator Bob Stivers and first aired on CBS in 1975. Many times, the People’s Choice Awards that are given vary significantly from other award shows such as the Academy Awards or Golden Globes because it is based purely on your enjoyment. Over the years, the categories have changed a bit, but there are usually categories like Favorite Leading Lady and Favorite On-Screen Match-Up.

How are the nominees chosen? That is a process that involves the editors of Entertainment Weekly, the People’s Choice production team, and a panel of fans.

And how are the winners chosen? They used to be based upon reports by the Gallup Polls. Gallup would offer surveys about different categories, but the process was not always been foolproof. When there is not a clear winner, there are often two awards given. That was the case in 2003 when the movies Spider-Man and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring were so close in voting that both were awarded Favorite Motion Picture. However, in 2005, the award show decided to allow online voting.

Who were the big winners this year? Of course, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and its cast were among the leaders. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest won Favorite Movie and Favorite Movie Drama. Johnny Depp won Favorite Male Star and Favorite Male Action Star for Movies. He shared Favorite On-Screen Matchup with Keira Knightly. Halle Berry won Favorite Female Action Star, Jennifer Aniston won Favorite Female Star, and Cameron Diaz won Favorite Leading Lady, while Vince Vaughn won Favorite Leading Man. Cars, my son’s personal favorite, won Favorite Family Movie.

As for music, the Carrie Underwood won Favorite Female Singer and Kenny Chesney won Favorite Male Singer. Nickelback won Favorite Group while Justin Timberlake’s “SexyBack” won Favorite R&B Song.

For Television, “Two and a Half Men” won Favorite Comedy, “The Simpsons” won Favorite Animated Comedy, and “Grey’s Anatomy” won Favorite Drama. Of course, “American Idol” won Favorite Reality Show. “Heroes” won Favorite New Drama and “The Class” won Favorite New Comedy. Ellen DeGeneres won two awards – Favorite Talk Show Host and Funny Female Star.
