Responsible Business Owners Still Experiment

You may think that trial and error are not part of a responsible business person’s game plan. In fact, experimentation is key to problem-solving and finding new and better ways of doing business. If you are sticking to the tried and true methods in your home-based business, you may be missing out on the benefits of experimentation.

It is not just the wild risk-takers who experiment in the business world, even rather stodgy and conservative businesses need to try things out, generate new ideas and then give them a test run, develop new products and services and give them a trial period, etc. It doesn’t make you irresponsible to inject experimentation into your home-business, instead it makes you forward-thinking and growth-focused (how’s that for some positive reinforcement for experimentation?)! If a business is going to grow and expand, it is necessary to move beyond established boundaries and inject some fresh approaches. Experimenting, trial, error, and calculated risk are all ways to keep change and growth alive and well in even the smallest, home-based business. So, now that you are convinced that experimenting is a good thing in business, how do you go about it with some measure of responsibility?

If you do your research and put some forethought and planning into trying out new products, services, processes, and ideas in your home-business, then experimentation doesn’t have to be a crazy risk or a waste of resources. Give yourself parameters when trying new things, set goals and keep records of how things go so that you can make a reasonable evaluation about experiments you may try. Just because something doesn’t work shouldn’t stop you from continuing to do some controlled experimentation—after all, some of the best innovations come from a little trial and error and the willingness to try new things.
