Scared to Vacation

I worked in TV news for 16 years, so I am a bit jaded when it comes to hearing bizarre stories, but a recent report about what can happen when you leave home on vacation shocked even me.

Earlier this month, a couple living 20 miles north of my neighborhood took a week’s vacation to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Unfortunately, they didn’t bother to secure their patio furniture or lock their gas grill in their garage or shed before they took off. When they returned home from their trip up north their deck was completely wiped clean. The grill and their lounge chairs were gone.

Now here’s where it gets interesting.

A day after they filed a police report, the couple received an anonymous letter in their mailbox. The note featured a profuse apology from a mom who claimed that her son had stolen their grill and that she was incredibly embarrassed. She wrote that she and her husband were mortified to find a grill in their garage, and that later the kid confessed that he had stole it from the vacationing couple’s house. The mother included two tickets to a Milwaukee Brewers game to show the couple how sorry she was that her juvenile delinquent son walked off with their property.

The older couple decided to take advantage of the tickets. Who wouldn’t given how well the Brew Crew is doing right now (Sports Illustrated cover, baby!)? So, the couple takes the 90-minute road trip down to Milwaukee, enjoys an incredible day at the ballpark and returns home late that night.

When they enter their home they see—nothing!

The entire house had been ransacked. All their furniture, electronics, china and other valuables were taken while the couple was cheering on the home team.

Wowzers!

Now, that’s a scheme you don’t hear about every day.

Food for thought before you head out on your Labor Day getaway.
