As a single parent, little acts of kindness go a long way. This afternoon I was reminded of just how beautiful it is when we reach out to serve those around us. Church had just gotten out and everyone was scurrying off to their cars. It was freezing cold, as it usually is this time of year where we live. I watched as one single mother and her five year old daughter walked out to their car, only to find that they had a flat tire. I’m sure her heart just sank. I watched this woman and her daughter stare blankly at the tire wondering what in the world they were going to do. As a single mother we don’t always know how to do all of the little every day things like changing a tire. Within a few minutes two men had stopped to help this woman in her time of need. They both had families to get home to, one had a two year old on his shoulders, but still they decided to set aside their own needs for the needs of this woman and her daughter. It was freezing cold, but they both got down in their Sunday best, jacked up the car, and changed her tire for her. Neither one of these men knew the woman well, but they stepped in anyway.
This time of year, we see people serving each other constantly. There are so many opportunities to reach out and help each other. You never know the impact you are going to have on these people’s lives. To these two men, they simply were changing a tire, but to that woman they were heroes. As single parents sometimes we underestimate the difference we can make in other’s lives. Take the time to reach out and help someone in need this season. You may just be their hero.
