Sounds of Water Could Help Them Sleep

Have you ever gone away for a weekend by the ocean, a lake or camped next to a gurgling stream? For many, the sound of water can be a great sleep-inducer and can contribute to a peaceful and restful night’s sleep. If you have a child who is a restless sleeper or who wakes during the night, perhaps the sound of gurgling water or lapping waves could be the ticket to a good night’s sleep?

There is just something about the sound of trickling or burbling water than can be incredibly relaxing—even for an energetic child. Of course, this won’t work for everyone, but it may very well be worth a try. You can either try the recorded sounds of water—whether it is the sounds of ocean waves undulating onto the beach, or the soft lap of waves on the gravel shore of a lake, or the sound of rain, or even the sounds of a tumbling stream; or if it is “real live” water sounds like a fountain or another water feature, there are multiple options for getting the sounds of water into your child’s bedroom to see if they will help her fall and stay asleep.

You can experiment and try out a few different versions of water sounds either during naptime or when a child goes to sleep for the night. Just because one does not work does not mean that other water sounds won’t work. Volume may be a factor as well and you can experiment with soft water sounds or ones that “drown out” the other sounds of your household. It may be that it is the sounds of life in your house that are keeping your child awake and the water feature sounds will create a soft, relaxing drone to lull them to sleep (and keep them asleep).
